Physician schedules are packed with patients. How do you ensure each person's care needs are met?
In bustling medical settings, it's essential to meet each patient's needs without rushing. Here's how to maintain high-quality care:
- Streamline administrative tasks using Electronic Health Records (EHRs) to maximize face-to-face time with patients.
- Implement a triage system to prioritize care based on the urgency of health issues.
- Foster a team-based approach, where nurses and assistants support patient care, ensuring everyone feels attended to.

Resist the urge to solve the hospital’s revenue challenges by overloading physician schedules. Admittedly, adding more and more patients is an easy way to increase revenue, but any short term gain comes with long term pain such as physician burnout, physician resignation and patient safety.

Healthcare professionals - physicians and nurses are increasingly burdened by the everyday hamster wheel of their work. We have to leverage technology to reduce the #reducetheburden on the people who everyday bring the highest level of care to patients and candidly each of us and our families.

Start by prioritizing efficient time management. Use appointment scheduling tools to allocate appropriate time slots based on patient needs—longer for complex cases, shorter for routine visits. Next, empower a collaborative care team. Delegating tasks like patient education, follow-ups, or pre-visit screenings to nurses or allied health professionals ensures nothing gets overlooked. Leverage technology like electronic health records (EHRs) to track patient history, flag urgent needs, and streamline documentation. Finally, focus on active listening and clear communication during appointments. Even with limited time, genuinely understanding a patient’s concerns fosters trust and better care outcomes.

One critical component that is missing from many of these conversations is the physician/providers responsibility to ask patients if their needs have been met. I try to always ask at the end of any interaction if the person has any questions or concerns, and I confirm if they are aware "what's next". I am continuously surprised at how often patients make it clear that I have not been clear with them, or tha tsome aspect of their follow-on plan is not feasible. A simple question or two provides patients with a lot of value.

For me, following these steps will be easy to ensure everyone gets the care they needed : * Prioritizing : Focusing on emergency cases based on triage system. * Using referral system : Referring special cases to correct department specialist. * Using modern day technologies : Using modern day technologies to keep update about patient's lab report and progress.
