One thing that makes it easier on patient education (or any user for that matter) is context, specifically specifying what is at stake. For e.g., most people are ok with stricter controls and pay more attention to security when something of tremendous value is at stake like their back accounts, and less so when the stakes are not high such as a news website. Education needs to emphasize the value of healthcare data and services, so the importance of security is clear.

I was at a busy hospital to see a specialist. Prior to arriving I spent an hour populating a new-patient information system. When I arrived I was given a clipboard and paper forms to complete. When I shared that I had completed the online forms they took back the clipboard. However, when I met with the PA, they asked me all the same questions again because my data was not in their system - where did it go?! After I completed the doctor visit, the doctor and nurse left the room with all my records still up on the screen. It took me 5 minutes to find someone to close out my on-screen records. Auditing the security practices of health care professionals and the systems they use will bring about greater care and respect for data privacy.
