One team is being overshadowed in a successful show. How can you ensure their contributions are recognized?

Showing appreciation is super important! Giving a big shoutout to everyone, especially the people working hard behind the scenes, can make a huge difference. Let's celebrate their wins and hard work together!

If your team is not getting the recognition it deserves from the press and audiences, you can send out a special press release highlighting just them and their efforts. You can recognize them during curtain calls and meetings. Your producer and board should reach out to each one individually with some kind of thanks (diplomatically of course so the other members of your production don't feel slighted). Absolutely make them feel appreciated and that their work has been needed and helped to make your show successful.

I found that during production week, if the light/sound/stage/costume/props techs are recognized especially when things start coming together. It usually ends up everyone has a night where it all comes together and then different people can be recognized. I usually have a Most Valuable Player per rehearsal. Actors get all the applause but the tech crews/individuals can be recognized where the actors applaud the crew!

I do rely on the stage manager to let me know if there is any issue that may be developing that they may not feel they can address. I ask cast and crew to not read reviews or to bring them to the theatre. I think this can help to keep everyone elevated. If the review is out and the cast have read it and only praises one team and not the other, then a meet before a show to elevate the team that did not get highlighted I think would be essential. Any publicity I would make a point that there are 2 casts and both are incredible. If the tension is generated within the production, making sure everyone knows that their role is essential and valued and without each and every member on the same page the production cannot reach it's best potential.

You can't always control how reviews or public attention around a show will play out. Often times the technical crew that is more vital to keeping a show functioning and successful are the most overlooked. The best way to keep them happy and feeling valued is ensuring that they know they are valued, thanked internally within the company or show and that they are appreciated. Basic kindness goes a long way to reminding stagehands people care and that the work isn't truly "thankless".
