I've had great success working with non-technical stakeholders in helping them under the true risk associated with cyber-attacks. For this, I take a three-pronged approach: 1. Explain technical matters in simple, easy to understand terms 2. Prepare a relevant presentation/discussion to cover the current threat landscape and what particular they need to know related to attacks targeting organizations just like theirs 3. Never talk down to anyone like they're a silly little kid

Cyber attacks can lead to significant financial losses, legal repercussions, & long-term damage to a company's reputation. It's essential to communicate gravity of these risks in way that resonates with non-technical stakeholders, emphasizing that Cybersecurity is not just an IT problem but business-wide concern. In today's world, Cyber insurance has become an important tool for managing risk. It can provide financial safety net if a Cyber attack leads to costly damages or legal battles.

There's a lot of talk about how CISOs should translate cyber security into the right language for the board. I don't disagree with this but I'd go further and say that the board and the relevant people in the security function should really be speaking the same language. Cyber security risks should be presented just as any other business risk and there should be an intelligent conversation about the organisation's risk appetite and the cost/benefit of the available mitigations. If that intelligent conversation isn't happening then there's likely a wider issue and it's worth digging to the root cause of that.

Being able to explain technical concepts in simple, easy-to-understand terms is critical to success in any field, especially in IT and ICS/OT cyber security. When working with others, we have to remember that they are people just like us, they just don't understand the same things we do. Just like we do not have the same knowledge or experiences as they do. So keep it simple and easy-to-understand, but never treat them like children.

This preventive focus not only strengthens the security infrastructure but also promotes a culture of awareness and responsibility throughout the organization. Encouraging active participation from all team members in cybersecurity initiatives enhances the overall effectiveness of protection strategies and significantly reduces the risk of disruptive incidents. Thus, cybersecurity ceases to be an isolated challenge of the IT department and becomes an integral part of daily business operations.

Building an effective presentation that demonstrates not only the current cyber security threat landscape, but highlights recent attacks against organizations like the stakeholders', can go a long way in helping them understand not only the associated risk that exists, but also the need to be proactive in addressing security gaps within their company.

By bridging the knowledge gap and emphasizing the business impact, we can get stakeholders on board with a strong cybersecurity posture.

An Incident Response Program is an excellent opportunity to work with non-technical team members. Not only in the Program itself, but when conducting tabletop exercises where you can work with non-technical team members to help them understand their role in response to an incident when it is occurring and any associated expectations that can be made clear. And documented for them! Just make sure they have a printed copy in case all of the company's systems are down!

Preparation for incident response involves not only creating a detailed plan but also regularly conducting incident simulations to ensure everyone is familiar with their specific duties. Transparency in communication during and after an incident is vital for maintaining stakeholder trust and for effective situation management. Investing in training and incident response practices not only strengthens security but also reinforces the organization's ability to adapt and respond to constantly evolving threats.

Implementing a robust business continuity plan is a demonstration of diligence and responsibility, essential elements for the long-term sustainability of any company. This planning not only minimizes the financial impact of potential disruptions, but also preserves the trust of customers and partners. Therefore, it is essential to educate all levels of the organization about the importance of these preventative measures for corporate resilience in the face of cyber challenges.

While technical defenses are crucial, fostering a culture of cyber resilience is equally important. Non-technical stakeholders must understand that business continuity extends beyond IT measures. Regular training sessions, realistic simulation exercises, and clear communication channels are vital. Empowering employees with the knowledge and tools to respond swiftly can significantly mitigate the impact of cyber attacks, ensuring the business remains resilient and adaptable in the face of evolving threats.

Critical business functions are the number one target of Cybersecurity, there is no cybersecurity without Business Continuation. It's crucial for non-technical stakeholders to understand that BCP is not just an IT concern but a vital business strategy that can protect the organization's reputation, financial stability, and long-term success.

Insurance is an expense that no management likes spending. However, this is a significant tool in the hands of the CISO to drive forward change and adoption of compliance and risk management. If the organization doesn't have a cybersecurity insurance policy, that should be a red flag. Insist that they do and work with the insurer to meet the minimum requirements they have for the policy to be effective. If, on the other hand, the organization already has a policy, this is your tool to ensure that the organization meets the minimum requirements (check when there's no claim yet on the cards). Alternatively, you can also have the premium of the policy when improving cyber posture. Steps that will get leadership on your side.

Not every risk is created equally, some can be tackled with a planned resource allocation, some are less critical and can be accepted and some can be transferred and this can be done via an insure policy. However prior to granting coverage, insurance providers will carry out a comprehensive review of a company's security maturity.

As leaders, Consider implementing Advanced Threat modeling techniques to identify potential vulnerabilities & Threats in your systems. Utilize Machine Learning Algorithms for Anomaly Detection, behavior analysis to enhance proactive threat detection capabilities. Implement robust incident response framework that includes real-time incident monitoring, rapid containment strategies, thorough Forensic analysis to mitigate impact of Cyber incidents swiftly. Regularly update security policies, procedures based on evolving threats, Industry Best Practices, ensure comprehensive staff training on Cybersecurity awareness & response protocols. Strengthen partnerships with cybersecurity experts, participate actively in Threat Intelligence programs.
