One thing I found effective is - have someone to be a social bridge, especially for the first 2 weeks. Appoint someone friendly or a HR person to bring the new hire for office social settings such as lunch, gatherings, etc. Introduce and verbalise some connections/similarities the new hire has with the colleague, such as “oh, he loves dogs too”! Ease the new hire in and he/she will be fine after a while.
