Having correct and identical priorities is essential. Everyone's priorities on the team MUST be on the same page if not, things will get missed, stuff will be overlooked, and then unnecessary-EXTRA TIME is ADDED to the job to get it done. People should focus more on enhancing their particular tasks, and at the same time UNDERSTAND HOW it relates to the next person in your company. In other words, you need to understand the machine if you want to improve it. You don't immediately single people out when there is a lag in one area, it may be because of something in another. If you jump to conclusions on a deficiency, you will easily sow distrust and dissent . Lastly, never rush things, but move with a sense of urgency.

The way I example this in my shop is by leading my technicians dependent of their level. Urgent and priority repairs always goes to my senior and seasoned technicians while the gravy work goes to my lesser experienced technicians. Doing this not only increases production but it frees up our lot for space. While satisfying not only our hot customers but also the easy ones.

One thing I have found effective as a team lead is to encourage proper communication. It's necessary as a manager or team leader to always encourage your team members to be very free to express themselves whenever they feel that there is need for a break during these peak periods. It's a common knowledge that there are periods when demand would be high and the clients need to be satisfied. Notwithstanding, the wellness and mental health of the team should not be mortgaged for customer's satisfaction. Sadly to note that fear of being tagged lazy restrains some folks from speaking up and taking a break. Proper understanding of the value you add to the team and the value of your well-being will always guide you to know when to take a break.

Burnout is a real thing. All of us mechanics have been through this, especially if you've ever worked on Ag Equipment in your life and harvest season is upon you. As much as the customers are extremely important and so is getting all the jobs done, your mechanics mental well-being is also important. If they need half a day off or a day off every now and then let them have it. Try not to over schedule work. It might sound counterproductive but no more burnt out your mechanic gets the less productive they're going to be during the hours that they're at work. And once they reach that burnout it doesn't matter if you keep them there for 12 hours, their productivity and efficiency is going to go way down

Totally agree with Melissa, regular scheduled breaks keep workshop efficiency at a good consistent average - time off work due to burnout is less predictable, more lengthy and less efficient. Having said that, if it is one of those tough-going harvests, creating a supportive culture where everyone helps eachother and where individuals feel comfortable asking for unscheduled time off will keep a technicians happy ??

During peak season when demand is high and stress is through the ceiling, most shops/garages are operating on extended hours. Ways to combat burnout is to cycle on and off of the overtime. Sure the pay is nice, but when you burnout a tech, their work can become sloppy and the last thing you want is your sloppy work to end up on the evening news and in litigations down the road. Lead your team by prioritizing their wellbeing. They have family and lives outside of work.

I agree with Melissa P. Productivity is inversely proportional to Burnout Stress, regardless of what your job is. Leaders to be understanding and realize that Happy employees will be more loyal and productive employees.
