As a Materials Science executive, how can you ensure that your employees’ needs are being met?

Holding regular meetings with employees to discuss tasks, project progress, challenges, and their needs. Creating an open and friendly atmosphere for dialogue and exchange of ideas, so that employees can express their ideas and opinions without fear of judgment. Providing constructive and regular feedback to employees on their performance, in order to help them improve and learn. One of the important things is direct communication with the management of that team. Because in some cases it has been seen that the attention of the senior manager has a very positive effect on increasing the efficiency of an employee.

Agreed. I would also add the importance of recognizing contributions and achievements swiftly following such. While recognition is great, it’s not meaningful to employees if it comes weeks or months later - they still feel overlooked. Additionally, when discussing different channels of communication, I would emphasize that this is important because people digest information differently. Some people learn and communicate best in writing, others need visuals, and others prefer verbal. It’s important to hit all forms so you’re reaching everyone effectively.

In my experience, employees don’t always communicate their goals without a concrete, clear structure to do so. I would clarify the importance of having a system for feedback and coaching. You need to have a mentorship/coaching program and regular reviews to open channels of communication and support people in their goals. The information here is generally correct; it’s just a bit too broad. It needs a sentence or two at the end clarifying the need for structure and a system for feedback/communication - unfortunately, it doesn’t happen organically if you don’t create it and reinforce it.

As with #1, it’s also important that recognition is timely. It can be challenging to provide recognition immediately when things are busy, but it’s key, because late recognition doesn’t hold the same impact. I’ve found it helpful to make this part of someone’s job description (whether it’s someone in HR or a department manager) so that someone is held accountable for it and takes initiative.

I’ve found the attitude around taking PTO to be especially important here. While the additional benefits and resources are nice, your employees will still reach burnout if they feel they cannot/should not take time off - it leads to guilt and stress even when “recharging.” Make sure your department managers and team leaders watch who is not using their PTO, encouraging them to do so, and making it easy to do so (by helping to find coverage, etc).

While this is a great article, it should be marketed more generally as “how to manage teams well” rather than material science-specific. There’s nothing here that is specific to material sciences and the pain points of those teams.
