Ignoring machine safety instructions creates serious risks. The first step is to have a one-on-one conversation with the operator, emphasizing the consequences for him and the team. Using real examples of incidents involving violations will help to emphasize the importance of the rules. Next, analyze the working conditions: deficiencies in training, lack of clear instructions, or a lack of personal protective equipment can contribute to such behavior. Regular training and practical exercises create a safety culture. It is also important to involve the team in the process of setting standards, which will increase responsibility for compliance and reduce risks.

Safety like anything else comes down to what's in it for them. I always find if you take the time to explain why the guideline is there and what the real personal consequences could be for them if they choose to ignore it, people respond better than just the 'a rule is a rule' approach. Nobody wants to leave work differently than how they came. The short cuts people come up with that end up being risky are usually due to a larger issue at hand. That being said, if you see something say something, still stands at the top.

One of the most effective strategies for me was applying the ABC model and using Behavior Based Safety. The most probable reason for this incident will most likely be an immediate positive consequence (the machine works faster for him for example). Once identifying the root cause, you need to implement a poke-yoke system that prevents the wrong usage or use positive reinforcement to encourage the correct usage

Directly addressing the issue is the initial step. Approach the operator in a non-confrontational manner, clearly explaining the potential safety hazards associated with their behavior and emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to established safety protocols. Ensure they fully understand the consequences of non-compliance, for who are working with this team ( operator , sub-leader, leaders etc). If the behavior persists, escalate the matter to higher management and consider implementing additional training or disciplinary measures as necessary. Safety is paramount and cannot be compromised.

Whenever I see this happen, especially with new operators, I always have them stop what they’re doing and explained what the issue was. This usually helps them understand what they did could have cause a safety issue and comes across better than saying “Because I said so.”
