Learners are feeling excluded by training materials. How can you address their feedback effectively?

Listen actively and empathetically: Take the time to truly understand the learners' concerns and perspectives. Ask clarifying questions and validate their feelings of exclusion. Conduct a thorough review of the training materials: Examine the content, language, visuals, and overall representation to identify any biases, stereotypes, or lack of diversity and inclusion. Involve diverse stakeholders: Engage a diverse group of learners, subject matter experts, and instructional designers to review the materials and provide feedback. This ensures a range of perspectives are considered. Make necessary adjustments: Based on the feedback, make intentional changes to the training materials to be more inclusive.

Throughout my career as a Trainer and Learning Development professional, I've encountered instances where learners felt excluded by the training materials provided. Ensuring inclusivity in training is crucial for engagement and success. The first step is to actively solicit feedback from the learners. In my previous roles, I implemented regular feedback sessions and anonymous surveys after each training module. When feedback indicated that some materials were not inclusive, I took this seriously and analyzed the feedback to understand specific concerns. In one instance, feedback revealed that training videos predominantly featured male trainers and examples. This inadvertently made some female employees feel less represented and valued.

As a lifelong learner, I realize that most of the learning material written, is written on the intellectual capacity of the writer, and not the learner. As an adult educator, I have seen that most of the learners struggle to understand the text as they do not know the meaning of 'big words'. And it is also true that most people will not grab a dictionary to look for a synonym, or definition of the word. This then makes the material difficult to understand. As course and material designers, we must write in simple language that is easy to understand, regardless of our title or qualification. like PhD, etc. Many adults lack proper literacy, and we must acknowledge that, as well as language barriers causing lack of understanding.

It might be helpful to assemble a focus group to analyze content. Having many sets of eyes (both literally and figuratively) can ensure that appropriate language, images, etc. are being presented.

As a professional, I have encountered some experiences in this subject. The most impactful was in Inclusive Language and Accessibility. I made a conscious effort to use inclusive language throughout our training materials. Additionally, I ensured that materials were accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities. Example: When I noticed that some employees had difficulty with dense text-based materials, I incorporated more visual aids and interactive elements such as quizzes and discussion boards to cater to different learning styles. This not only made the materials more engaging but also ensured that every employee could access and benefit from the training, regardless of their preferred learning style or physical abilities.

To address feedback about training materials feeling exclusive, I recently launched public training classes with a "back to school" theme. Drawing from childhood memories of colorful workbooks, red pen markings, and rewarding stickers, I made the training materials interactive and engaging. I provided colourful notes, a red pen for feedback, and gave out stickers to stick in the notes. This approach aimed to recreate the fun and inclusiveness of school days, making learning more enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
