How would you navigate conflicting artistic visions with a photographer client during the editing process?

Absolutely! It's crucial to follow what the client is asking for. If they want vibrant colors or specific edits, deliver those. If they prefer simple, light colors, accommodate their preference. Meeting their expectations should always be a priority. However, if you believe your client could benefit from suggestions or feedback, there's no harm in offering your expertise. It's essential to ask for their permission before providing unsolicited advice. For example, you might say, "I understand you're looking for vibrant colors in your photos. Would you be open to some suggestions I have that might enhance the overall look even more?" This approach shows respect for their vision while offering your professional insight.

It depends on exactly what I am shooting, but at the end of the day, the client is the one who is paying for a product. We would have spoken about their vision prior to our session, and we will have, in most cases, come to a shared goal. If there are suggestions I have during the editing process, I will definitely add input which hopefully the client will take. If not, I'll edit towards their preferences, provided it does not involve an unreasonable extra amount of work.

I have found while concepting with your photographer, express your needs for the final product. If you need a full shot of the entire outfit or look it's a dialogue to open before hand. A portrait can mean something very different.

Shoot pix and deliver to the client. Let client choose which ones to use. Don't overthink it. Life is a brief train trip....

One thing I've always found useful is the dialogue between the two parties. Firstly the satisfaction of the client has to be given utmost importance. Once it's established the communication between the client and the photographer will work wonders for the project. Be it the editing or the post processing.

If you are shooting people eg. wedding , family, portrait. there may be a vanity issue with some clients. If so, this can be tricky and you may never spot the issue until the client surrenders their personal feelings. My advice is get in first. Show the image or the images/story first and explain why you chose the image or images to tell the storey. Make your story creative or romantic and throw in some technical info too. By using this procedure you are giving the client the opportunity to see the whole story before they start making changes. Remember the client is often not overly creative. Give the the whole presentation first so they can then add their ideas from an informed position of understanding.

I've always worked with mood boards, this is better than words. Sometimes we have different ideas of what a word would represent in our imagination. We need to align expectations with reference images. Once the shooting is done, the client chooses the images. For post-production what I like to do, is to present two or three different gradings. We start from there, and we work towards their vision. We build the image together.

Offer Examples...Yeah...kinda. I would perhaps use other images from the same shoot to compare but I wouldn't bring in other images. That can sometimes confuse the client. Communication is the key. The photographer must find out exactly what the client thinks and why. Then the photographer can offer the correct solution.

Many people are visual learners so I understand showing your client(s) examples of your work. That said, many people hire photographers based on their style, so most of my clients already know what I can do before they hire me. If it is a corporate style photo shoot, they will often have branding cues they wish me to follow. In those instances I abide by their requests. Either way, I always remember that it is my job to use my tools and skillset to make their vision a reality. I generally save my artistic vision for personal work that I do after hours.

There are 3 types of clients. "The easy going not so creative". These people accept your creative recommendations easily. "The got to have input go getter". These people must make changes, its in their DNA. "The Super Vain" These people only see themselves in the image. They will be happy if you can make them look great. However...The paying client is King and must always have the final say and even compliment them on the changes they made.

Many times I am confronted with the, "I don't know what I want until I see it" client. In these instances, I make sure to communicate well and have the expectations of the deliverables, the fees required to get the job done including re-work based on them changing opinions etc. Be professional, be courteous, and explain the reasons behind your opinions. Always remember that the client may not remember everything you did for them, but they will remember how you made them feel when they worked with you.

If everything is well explained from the beginning, then we avoid lots of turnarounds. Since I work in post-production, what I like to tell my clients is to give me all the references and the markups that they need. Extra changes have extra rates. So they take their time into thinking exactly what they need. If a client would like to have the option of changing many things, we talk about it beforehand, and we can set a rate per day or per hour. Otherwise, I always propose a video-call to retouch live and speed up the process. This is a workflow that works for me and it's fair on both ends. Good communication and good will is everything, we are here to solve their problems.

Setting boundaries is really hard but really necessary to a successful outcome. Listen to what they want to achieve. Identify everyone’s specific roles. Clarify call times and shot lists. Don’t be afraid to refer back to the lists if boundaries are crossed. Clear definitions will help you deliver.

Planning & communication is the key to the shoot. Don't worry about a super fussy planner, they are good to work with and will appreciate your effort. The non planner who appears to be easy going still has an expectation in their head and if you don't produce that expectation you may find it difficult when edit time comes.

Don't argue. Go back to the drawing board & capture their picture. That simple. Then if they're are unhappy, say, may I show you some of my ideas. Always put the client first. Make them feel heard & it'll always work out in the end.
