How would you address concerns from parents who are skeptical about the benefits of technology in education?

If any parent expresses concerns I would listen actively; acknowledge their concerns, and then address the concern of safety when using technology in the classroom. I would inform them that the tools and platforms selected have built in safety features such as administrative controller permissions to age appropriate websites only, blocks on regular websites that teachers must approve in the event of showing an educational video that was posted on YouTube, and then ensure that the students account are also age restricted,do not use the students images, full names, or any other personal information.I would also encourage parents to come visit and observe how technology is being used to track & enhance student progress, to ease their minds.

Technology is an interesting, beneficial, developmental tool but at the sametime learners need close safety protocols even at home. For school learners, parents should secure that the device and the apps used are educational either/or meets their age. I believe that school and parents should coordinate closely regarding the use of technology between home and school. We wont go anywhere by resisting the use of the tevhmology, rather we can work on securing the system and go with the flow.

The question relates to DIGITAL technology. We need to be clear in education when communicating concerns and benefits. We all need to educate our young in the dangers and benefits, as we would with any tool they may come to use in their life.

No tool can replace teachers but at the same time teachers need to strengthen their skill by using effective teaching aid which will enhance their teaching - learning process in the class . Thus it is important to instil value based instructions while introducing technology in the class which will make students responsible for their action and answerable to parents and others . For teachers it is important to keep parents updated on the progress made by their child by using technology in their learning process …. Deep knowledge, vast information, various examples related to the topic within seconds and above all ready for the future!!

Data for progress monitoring is also provided much more readily and efficiently with technology tools. With the variety of options provided by technology, teachers can also offer students a choice for work submission. If a student prefers to demonstrate mastery of a concept using audio recording they can do so and if they wish they can create presentations digitally or can submit digital artifcacts of paper based creations. The student has more control.

By using the technology we can make our classes more interactive and can increase student engagement. Planning class time is critical. When my school changed from a straight six-period day to a 4 hour block schedule of 8 classes over two days, the time available with the new schedule made the integration of technology much easier. The block schedule allowed for more variety within one class period. Students can begin class with a journal entry reviewing a concept from the previous class. Following that, they can have a collaborative discussion to outline key points. Next, movement can be incorporated as students add shared ideas charts around the room. Finally, teachers can provide practice on a device, a group lesson, or can divide students into groups with some using technology independently to practice while others receive remediation.

I trust learners. When they abuse this, by distracting themselves somewhere they shouldn't be, using the available technology, they lose the priviledge that the technology brings. That's all I do. When learners see that around them, their peers benefit from the available tools, they get back on track and show that they are responsible enough to be trusted again.

While guidance and responsible usage is certainly needed in these uncharted waters, the potential for good outweighs the risk.

If there are any edtech investors reading this, make more investments in diverse founders who best understand today's multicultural and multilingual student populations. There are enough educational resources that match the student demographics we are serving in 2024.

One may look at technology as a value added model. After thirty plus years in education, experience shows this change can be thoughtfully implemented in such a way as to supplement and support classroom effectiveness. Although students may become distracted, use of technology to develop deeper understanding through simulations and creativity tools can offer new ways of approaching old learning problems. It is up to the teacher to develop a metric for how and why students should interact with technology. There are so many powerful possibilities available in my specific field of science education, where virtual laboratory experiences provide students with safe opportunities for learning and growth. Address the genuine concerns of the parents .Call in parents for group orientation and also address their concerns individually on a regular basis. Parents need to be guided that use of technology being the need of the hour ,and its integration in the learning process will help build skills and empower the children. Parents could also come and observe the classes.
