Data migration typically involves four phases: planning, extraction, transformation, and loading. Each of these phases requires different types of documentation and may require more or less frequent updates based on the complexity, scope, and duration of the project. For example, during the planning phase a detailed data migration plan document is necessary and should be updated when there are changes to the project scope, schedule, budget, or resources. During the extraction phase a data extraction document is needed that includes details on the data source, the extraction methods, extraction logs, and extracted data files. This document may need frequent updates if issues arise with the data extraction such as errors, missing data, or inconsistencies. Similarly for transformation and loading phases documents are needed that include details on data mapping, transformation methods, transformation logs, transformed data files, target system details, loading methods, loading logs and loaded data files. These documents may need frequent updates if there are issues with the transformation or loading such as errors, data loss/duplication or rejection/corruption.
