How will IoT impact the future of work and productivity?

In the future, IoT will revolutionize work. Picture a factory where machines notify us before they fail, saving time and money. Sensors streamline workflows by tracking movements. Plus, IoT ensures safety by monitoring conditions. With personalized workspaces adjusting to individual preferences, work becomes not only more efficient but also more comfortable and productive.

The integration of IoT into the workplace has profoundly transformed the dynamics of work, enabling unprecedented levels of remote and flexible employment. There is no need to share the user's identity with the backend system. Moreover, the behavior pattern of a specific person can also be stored at the edge. These smart and connected workplaces may be a single intelligent building or an estate of intelligent buildings, or an entire city. There are no limits. Covid accelerated the use of intelligent buildings. Making sure we were working in well ventilated, hygienic and socially distanced work spaces. The intelligent building technology hub which can be changed to work for you. Usually the technology monitors as a minimum every floor of the building, however many times this is available for every space and room in a building. This supports individual teams to make their workspaces work for them. Make sure you understand what is monitored by the technology and the implications for you as a person. Everything can be configured to suit you.

IoT does not need the traditional skills the existing technology industry uses. In a web 3.0 connected world some computer science skills are transferrable, but it is engineering skills which are at the core of the skill set needed. Traditionally the technology industry has focused on software skills, whereas IoT is based on a foundation of hardware skills. Traditional roles do not transfer either. Expect to retrain rather than pick up skills online, with formal qualifications required for all but the most junior roles. I have collaborated with ChatGPT on this article but I must say that I disagree with what the AI (LLM) gives as advice on the new skills and roles required for IoT. The advice it has given is not correct.

This is a bit of a tricky one. Employees will increasingly need expertise in data analytics, as IoT generates vast amounts of information that require interpretation and actionable insights. Roles related to cybersecurity will become pivotal to safeguard sensitive data in an interconnected environment. Additionally, the demand for professionals capable of managing and optimizing IoT ecosystems will rise, creating opportunities for specialists in device management, connectivity, and system integration.

As AI can now start to pick ip the workload with creating and developing the IT pieces of IoT, there is an evolving demand for humans to be able to physically install the machines and compute units, cameras and sensors. Currently today there is a skill gap which creates immense opportunity for new businesses and employee work forces, which could be extremely rewarding seeing the huge impact in front of you these extended systems can deliver.

As IoT reshapes industries, demand for cross-disciplinary expertise will increase, highlighting the need for skills in cybersecurity, network infrastructure, and AI-driven analytics. Continuous learning will be key as professionals must stay ahead of rapid technological advances to remain competitive. In our office building, IoT-enabled energy management systems optimised energy usage based on occupancy and usage patterns, significantly reducing our energy costs. I used IoT wearables to monitor health metrics and productivity levels, providing insights to improve work conditions and employee health. Advanced workforce management ensures better employee welfare and productivity.

IoT is not a disruptor, generally it provides an entirely new approach to new problems. IoT is architected to be decentralised by default. Distributed hardware devices are installed where monitoring, management and measurement are required of a specific environment, for example whether a waste facility is near capacity or to keep an office environment at a particular temperature for people to work in a comfortable environment. Certainly IoT is a key way to solve specific problems that digital technology can't address, for example to control the ideal growing conditions for crops to improve crop yields, or check on the purity of air to reduce the incidence of asthma in the population without any human intervention.

IoT has the potential to drive innovation and disruption across various industries. By providing real-time data and connectivity, IoT can lead to the development of new products and services, improve operational efficiency, and open up new business models. For example, in manufacturing, IoT can enable predictive maintenance of equipment, reducing downtime and increasing efficiency.

My personal pleasure of working in IoT comes from how creative we can be with the problem solving, as technology evolves and new tools become available creates even more exciting opportunities. Solution in the workplace for worker safety using vision that incorporates llm with the data to create regular reports of activities and identified breaches to advise on training and up skilling for the workforce. The possibilities are endless, but always ask “whats the value”

Sensors "everywhere" is the model of the future, but more importantly are actionable insights that can be gleaned across multiple market segments using AI. Cities and utilities are overwhelmed with data and they need recommendations that are based on real life business rules and recommendation engines. Imagine being able to access data from the floods in Maine to the droughts in California to manage and monitor well use and scarce resource options. Of course we can't pipe the water from Maine to the fields of California, but we can understand local usage patterns and trends to help optimize the peaks and valleys to potentially level these extremes and reduce risks.

The proliferation of IoT technologies has a profound impact on fostering social and environmental responsibility. IoT offers unparalleled opportunities to monitor and mitigate ecological footprints, optimize energy consumption, and reduce waste through intelligent data collection and analysis. These technologies empower individuals and organizations to actively contribute to global sustainability efforts and community well-being by enabling smarter resource management and facilitating access to critical information and services. Whilst carbon dioxide is the most prevalent GHG methane is 28 times more potent, 23% of methane emissions originate in the oil and gas sector. In communities in many countries IoT is being used to support some of the most vulnerable citizens live an independent life in their own homes rather than them live in institutionalised social care facilities.

Remote monitoring, using sensors to understand workplace frequency by staff/employees would have a high impact on data gathering from utilities (energy, water consumption & HVAC usage) for multiple workspaces in the organization. The benefits cannot be overemphasized as it would give the raw data of human consumption patterns to be able to make decisions driven by numbers (data)
