How does a UX designer collaborate with automotive engineers in the design process?

In my experience I emphasise the critical importance of early engagement with engineering constraints in the design process. Maintaining an ongoing dialogue with the engineering team is not only essential for comprehending constraints but also for staying informed about their evolving timelines. What may be deemed impossible today might become feasible tomorrow. This proactive approach is instrumental in bridging the gap between design and engineering, ultimately enhancing delivery speed.

It's also important to include other important team members, like e.g. product managers, or business analysts, who contribute to the product's vision. Involving a wider group of people helps generate more support and makes everyone feel more connected to the project

When involving engineers in a UX design process, include a step that includes documenting and sharing goals for the work ahead. This can really illuminate and build bridges to solutions when barriers arise in the process.

When co-creating you should consider how these technologies (IoT) can improve the driving experience. By involving IoT experts in the process, you can create user scenarios that capitalize on the growing trend of connected vehicles

I recommend collaborating with people (true co-creation) who may be harmed by the design process going wrong. This can be in the design process or to inform personas for journey mapping and will highlight potential pain points early on in the design process so the team can be prepared to build better design solutions.

Prototyping is a great opportunity to run ideas by your user group that faces harm if the design marginalizes them and their needs. This level of co-creation is how design teams build solutions that work for the people who use their products.

Documentation is an excellent opportunity for iteration and collaborative problem-solving for team members. By making documentation iterative, it allows for designs to be flexible and to put user's needs at the front of the design process.

Sound is also an important, but sometimes overlooked, part of the overall driving experience. Like with electric vehicles distinctive noises, create recognizable sounds, or it can make driving more enjoyable with customizable audio settings, like voice commands and noise-canceling tech.

When it comes to automobiles, you have to experience it the way it builds. But for some reason, most people do not understand how to feel it even when everything is just there to witness. So UX can attract a few of them in some way or another and still play a major part in how the machine should be used. Otherwise, it is just there for show. Not to experience but to forget after you use it.
