How does indexing affect your SQL Server query efficiency?

Indexes can be a powerful tool for optimizing database performance by allowing the database engine to locate specific data more quickly. It is important to choose the appropriate index types, monitor their selectivity, and manage the overhead associated with index maintenance to ensure optimal performance.There are several types of indexes, including B-tree, Hash, Bitmap, and Clustered Columnstore Indexes. An index is more effective when its selectivity is high, meaning there are many distinct values in the column. For instance, indexing a column with only a few unique values, like gender, might not yield significant performance improvements.

Indexes in SQL Server are crucial for enhancing data retrieval efficiency. They act as special lookup tables that the database search engine uses to speed up data retrieval by pointing directly to the data in a table. An index functions similarly to an index in a book, allowing the database to quickly locate all rows containing a specific value, such as a "customer ID," without scanning every row in the table. This targeted approach significantly improves query performance and reduces the time needed to retrieve specific data.

Indexing essentially creates another table within the database, but it only contains data from the indexed column. Therefore, when a query uses the indexed column for searching, the database only needs to scan a very small amount of pages (index seek) compared to scanning all pages of the table (table scan), resulting in fast query execution times. However, when performing DML (Data Manipulation Language) operations, indexes are also modified, causing DML operations to take longer than usual. Therefore, if the business logic of the table involves frequent insert, update, or delete operations, it's advisable to limit indexing.

There are several type of indexes avaiable oin SQL Server like Clustered, Non-Clustered, Columnstore, Filtered, Spatial and many more. But the widely used ones are Clustered and Non-Clustered. A clustered index defines the order in which data is physically stored in a table. Table data can be sorted in only way, therefore, there can be only one clustered index per table. In SQL Server, the primary key constraint automatically creates a clustered index on that particular column. A Non-clustered index doesn’t sort the physical data inside the table. In fact, a non-clustered index is stored at one place and table data is stored in another place. This allows for more than one non-clustered index per table.

Indexes improves query performance as well as maintains and utilizes minimal server resources. If indexes are not created they will chew all server resources and causing TempDB to grow unexpectedly. Indexes are to be maintained on regular basis whether they are effective and used by query optimizer to produce optimal plan. On the other hand, too many indexes slow down DML statements and require storage.

He usado distintos servicios de hosting a la hora de montar una web, y por lo general cuentan con MySQL, Apache, PHP Y PHPMyAdin. Respecto a índices en MySQL, se cuenta con índices primarios, únicos, full tex, índices secundario etc. Si tienes una asociación, podría indexar la columna que almacena el número de credencial del socio como índice único, y luego buscar ese valor en una consulta para ver el resto de los datos de ese socio; de esa manera, MySQL no tendrá que buscar en toda la tabla, ya que detiene la busqueda al encontrar el valor ingresado.
