1 What is GTP?

GTP stands for GPRS Tunnelling Protocol, where GPRS means General Packet Radio Service. GPRS is a packet-switched service that allows mobile devices to access data services over GSM networks. GTP is a protocol that creates and manages tunnels between different network elements, such as base stations, routers, and servers. A tunnel is a logical connection that carries data packets between two endpoints, without exposing them to the intermediate nodes. GTP enables data transmission by encapsulating and decapsulating the packets with additional headers and trailers.

Tunneling Protocol is one of the must important element that helps Signalling between nodes, without TP Telecommunications signals transport will be not possible to do. Voice, Data,Video signals are depending of this method. GTP has the most important about signalling protocol. VIDEO and Voice packets are the most important to control because if there is delay o loss packets the quality of services fails and represents bad customer experience (poor images, freeze images, robotic audio stream).

2 How does GTP work?

GTP has two versions: GTPv1 and GTPv2. GTPv1 is used for data transfer, while GTPv2 is used for control signalling. GTPv1 operates on top of UDP, while GTPv2 operates on top of TCP or SCTP. Both versions use the same port number: 2123. GTP has three components: GTP-U, GTP-C, and GTP'. GTP-U is the user plane component that handles the data packets. GTP-C is the control plane component that handles the signalling messages, such as creating, modifying, or deleting tunnels. GTP' is the charging component that handles the billing information.

As there are different signals ( Voice, Data, Video) it's important to determinate what is the correct one that can Transport and control those signales during routing route between both points. As is indicate GTPv1 is for DATA transfer and GTPv2 CONTROL Signalling. DATA means all digital sampled signals (Voice, Video,Text, Media), CONTROL those signals will be delivered without errors or delay.

One of the key benefits using GTP is saving routing cost. This is because Signalling channels represents the must sensitivy element into the Mobile network, because all the SERVICES are under surveillance of the packet DATA. Security, Privacy, hidden data, accounting and billing service are running over this.
