We are familiar with the idea that DHCP is the primary attack surface in windows environment. Two of the major security threats that no one talks about are Malware Distribution where redirected traffic can be used to distribute malware to Windows clients and thus, the Infected systems can lead to further security breaches, data loss, and operational disruptions. Another major threat is Credential Harvesting where attackers can capture authentication credentials sent over the network, especially if traffic is rerouted through malicious gateways. Compromised credentials can be used to gain unauthorized access to sensitive infrastructure and data.

2 DHCP starvation and exhaustion

Another security threat of DHCP is starvation and exhaustion. This is when an attacker floods the network with DHCP requests using spoofed MAC addresses, depleting the pool of available IP addresses on the DHCP server. This can cause legitimate clients to fail to obtain an IP address or renew their lease, disrupting their network access.
