How does BGP enable cloud migration?

BGP, or Border Gateway Protocol, is like a map for the internet. Imagine it as a guide that helps routers decide the best paths for data to travel between different networks. Routers use BGP to share information about available routes and choose the most efficient one. For example, if you want to send data from your computer in India to a server in London, BGP helps routers along the way figure out the best route by considering factors like speed and reliability. It's like plotting the fastest road trip on a map for your data. In simpler terms, BGP is the GPS of the internet, making sure your data takes the quickest and most reliable path to its destination.

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a set of rules that determine the best network routes for data transmission on the internet. The internet consists of thousands of private, public, corporate, and government networks linked together through standardized protocols, devices, and communication technologies.

BGP provides the flexibility, scalability, and control needed to seamlessly integrate on-premises networks with cloud environments, ensuring a smooth and efficient cloud migration process. It facilitates Multi-Homing and Redundancy for High availability; IP address mobility due to changing IP addresses for workloads, BGP can advertise and withdraw routes dynamically. Traffic Engineering, Route Aggregation.

BGP refers to the routing protocol used to ensure proper interconnection between autonomous systems. BGP is the protocol used in the backbone of the Internet. It allows organizations that have their own AS to interconnect with others.

The journey of a packet on the internet is similar to driving to the closest gas station and asking the attendant how to reach your destination. The attendant says "I don't know, but I heard from the gas station X miles down Y road that he knows how to get there." So you drive to that gas station and repeat the process. Eventually, you (hopefully) arrive at a gas station that says "Yea, sure, it's right there." The gas stations on the internet are routers. BGP is the language that the routers use to talk to each other. It consists of (mostly) messages that say "I know how to reach this destination at this distance."

In cloud computing, BGP is used to connect virtual networks within a cloud provider’s infrastructure to the Internet. This allows for efficient communication and routing between different networks, enabling the seamless flow of traffic between cloud-based services and the Internet. Cloud providers use BGP to connect their virtual networks to the Internet by configuring BGP routers at the edge of their network. These routers are connected to the Internet via an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and are responsible for exchanging routing information with other BGP routers on the Internet.

BGP plays a significant role in cloud migration by managing the routing of traffic between on-premises environments and cloud services. This is especially important when enterprises adopt a multi-cloud strategy or hybrid cloud models. BGP ensures that data can be routed efficiently between these environments, reducing latency and improving reliability. For instance, in a cloud migration project, BGP was used to dynamically reroute traffic during the phased migration, minimizing downtime and maintaining application availability.

BGP is a tool you learn after you learned OSPF, or other advanced protocols. But the idea is the same, as you are migrating from one cloud to another, you want something that acts as a failover or alternate path so nothing goes down. But it's very different in that it has a lot of "knobs" that change attributes within the protocol where your focus is more on policy and less on metrics. In my experience with SD-WAN deployments, BGP has been instrumental in handling the exchange of routing information between the SD-WAN and other external networks, allowing for more efficient path selection and redundancy.

In a nutshell, SD-WAN is to networks what outsourced Cloud is to computing. Underneath the SD-WAN are some assortment of physical and logical network technologies managed by whatever company you've outsourced that process to. There's no real magic to SD-WAN despite all the buzz, but it can be a way to externalize operational costs to an outside provider which can aggregate expensive expertise in network management across a larger customer base to reduce the cost per customer. In general, it becomes less cost effective as your network scales up and there are (as always with outsourcing) tradeoffs that should be carefully considered in an informed manner.

The majority of Cisco SD-WAN guides and posts I have found use static routing rather than routing protocols on the transport-side. Static routes are all very well for SD-WAN tunnel traffic but I was wanting to understand how you equate for DIA traffic in a more real-life situation where address ranges are advertised via BGP.

Understand that BGP like DNS and Bind are brilliantly designed and highly flexible tooling which configured to best practice will keep on trucking. Make an effort to thoroughly understand the protocols, extensions and limitations, find a subject matter expert. Read the RFCs even though they are dull - in the old dys the O'Reilly books were the bibles. NEVER auto commit BGP changes network wide because you can easily saw off the branch you are sitting on (See Optus/Australia). Build your solution with security as a requirement from the start - it is hard (very) to retrofit. Have a test environment current with your operational network, available readily. Have

Algunas prácticas recomendables son las siguientes: Utilizar prefix-list para mejorar el manejo de los prefijos a publicar. Utilizar Route aggregation para minimizar el peso de la tabla de enrutamiento que se comparte entre pares. Utilizar route map para filtrar redes. En caso de ser proveedor de internet (última milla o internacional) permitir full routing en los router de borde.

The Cisco SD-WAN BGP documentation puts a lot of emphasis on using a loopback interface rather than the physical interface for the transport-side (VPN0) BGP peering. This not the only option and I assume is meant more for if you have multiple links and want to route through an issue (like with iBGP) rather than around it (routing convergence).

Be sure to take advantage of BGP AS path prepends and route filters to segment your network, optimize routing, create redundancy, and decrease convergence time.

Al levantar un peer eBGP es fundamental no confundir rutas privadas a la hora de publicar ya que puede ocasionar bloqueos por parte de entidades regulatorias y sanciones. BGP es compatible con otros protocolos de enrutamiento interno, solo hay que recordar siempre redistribuir las rutas deseadas utilizando "redistribute" en los enrutadores.

One should be careful about depending on RPKI and ROAs as a security measure. In fact, since ROAs only attest to the valid origin AS of a route, they have a critical weakness and can amount to little more than a cryptographically signed instruction to the hijacker of which ASN to prepend at the beginning of their announcements.
