How do you write SEO-friendly headlines and meta descriptions?

Keyword optimization is important, but make sure you write for humans first, not just the robots. ?? Avoid overly complex jargon and focus on simple, clear language that gets your point across.

One of the best ways to make sure you are developing great headlines and descriptions - that work both to attract users and to be more SEO friendly - is to use the variety of Generative AI tools out there. I use ChatGPT (the free version seems good enough to me), Bard and Bing and feed them my newsletter to help with this. Pretend You are an SEO Expert. Write 10 examples of titles, descriptions and tags that would be SEO friendly for this newsletter: <PASTE CONTENT HERE>. As of this writing, ChatGPT 3.5 is best, Google's Bard is just OK. Bing seems to be clueless about SEO. But experiment! Then take whatever you get with a lot of salt. I typically take the output and then tweak it for how I want to use it.

One thing I’ve found helpful is chatting with Chat-GPT for suggestions around keywords for content I want to create which provides me with some useful insights before I do a deep dive with SEMRush or Spyfu.

One tip you wouldn't see documented in Google webmaster guidelines/Search essentials is: Using numbers and brackets in titles+descriptions improve ranks! Including a number in your title makes it more memorable and adding brackets to provide valuable context can entice readers to click. For example, instead of a bland title like 'The Benefits of Yoga,' try '10 Surprising Benefits of Yoga [Infographic]' or 'How to Improve Your Writing Skills in 30 Days [Free Guide].'

Are you a local business? Then you should definitely include your location to the title as you want to attract nearby searchers only. Are you a well-know brand/company? Then you should test including company/brand name to title as this can raise trust and well-known brands are more likely to get clicked. Do you offer a service? Make sure to include your strength or what your customers value you for, like trustworthiness, quality work, expertise... Do you sell a product? Try to test as many product attributes as possible. Sometimes many different keywords related to your product can have the same search volume, but you can test different attributes to see which resonates best with the searcher: size, color, material, product type...

Writing catchy headlines is more art than science, so have fun with it! Keep it short and sweet, and don't be afraid to share a joke or showcase your personality.

Make sure to optimize per platform, such as short form video for Tiktok, or carousels for LinkedIn. My favorite SEO hack to show up on Google Search is to write a blog post and embed a YouTube video in the blog - it will show up twice on google search since Google owns YouTube.
