How do you write a project charter?

A project charter should include an executive summary of the project, i.e., a condensed overview of the project for the benefit of those who may not have the time or need to read the entire proposal or charter. It should briefly outline the project objectives, scope, methods, schedule, costs, and benefits in a concise format. It wouldn't typically include in-depth analysis or justification as seen in the business case nor as detailed descriptions of project plan components.

One can divide the Project Charter into 3 major components: Objectives, scope and responsibilities. Under these, list down the problem statement, the proposed business case, VMG, Timeline, scope, budget and roles of stakeholders.

Measurable Outcome Include tangible benefits to ascertain project success. "Increasing efficiency by 20%" rather than "improve efficiency." ?? Strategic Alignment Ensure the project purpose aligns with broader organizational goals. This fosters internal support and momentum. ?? Avoid Over-generalization Being too broad can dilute the project's focus. Precision in intent can streamline execution. ?? In conclusion, a well-articulated purpose paves the path for a project's success and stakeholder alignment.

For me in order to prepare the project charter a business case must be done before. This feeds into the project charter for time and cost. We can not say how the project supports the mission if we did not know the overall feasibility study of the project.

How do you write a project charter?, From my last 14 years experiences i would say that,Project starter just the scope work what you are going to execute at the ground,a project charter is an introduction of a project to everyone especially to a new member of the project team,from the project charter,every stakeholder can understand the broader level view of the project and project chatrter in my opinion It is a “Caricature” of the project almost like a road map it will give the idea of the project, especially new project members who are not on the project board at the initial time of the meeting. Ensure to get a clear scope definition, clearly defining the project's scope from the outset. This prevents potential misalignments down the road. Always involve end-users in the scope definition process. I've witnessed scenarios where management alone decided on the scope without involving actual system users or superusers for testing. This often leads to a mismatch between what's delivered and what's truly needed, since those making the decisions aren't the primary system users.

And through Project Charter team get an idea about the projects like a caricature, and can well utilize for further project planning. PM should understand this the project charter is not complex, it should be very simple to understand, and everyone can read them,a better project charter will have only 5 pages or less, Project charter should be very brief always.The project charter can prepare the project sponsor, project initiator, or project manager before the first project kick-off meeting or after, in the presence of project team members. The Project Manager can well prepare with the help of project team members.

Ignoring critical stakeholders like the Sales and Customer Support team, who will field inquiries and feedback post-launch, or the IT team, responsible for ensuring the campaign runs smoothly on the website, can lead to unforeseen challenges and discrepancies in execution.

Leveraging a project charter is vital for cross-functional system improvements. Key points from my experience include: 1. Stakeholder Impact: Understand who will be affected. For platforms like Salesforce, consider how changes impact data and all users. For instance, while enhancing tracking for the Sustainability and Compliance teams, remember that sales and customer care also interact with inquiries. Overlooking them can result in scope creep and budget issues. 2. Scope Definition: Define the project's scope clearly from the start to avoid misalignments. 3. End-User Inclusion: Involve end-users in scope definition. Relying solely on management decisions, without user input, can lead to unmet needs.
