Captions are more than what many think. Fact is, a caption describes what is NOT in your image. This might be the who, what, where, when, why and how. If this sounds familiar, it is. These are the basic questions of a journalist. Or photojournalist. This tells us what your viewer does not know about your image. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but if we don’t have the details about a photo then we are missing words. For example, is a photo of a wrecked car one that was from an accident? Or from a wrecking yard where it was being crushed? Or was it used as a stunt car in racing? The only person who might actually know is the photographer. I see skimped captions all the time, assuming your reader will just figure it out is folly.

In my experience, a picture does paint a thousand words, but still a great, engaging photo caption makes a big difference because it give more details. An example would be photographing a well-preserved hut in the Antarctic continent utilized by famed Explorer’s Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen. Good photos capture the antiquated time frame of the turn of the last century and how polar heroes risked their life to go where no man has ever been before. The huts were where the rest of the crew stayed and wintered over in some cases to support the effort of these ambitious teams. A hit by itself it no big deal but the hut of a heroic explorer becomes a whole different photo with excitement, vision and meaning.
