Context is of utmost importance. There is generally something hiding in the background that is triggering conflict. Conflict itself is only gasoline; you have to find where the fire is coming from.

Exploring your character's roots by examining their origins, family dynamics, and formative experiences is essential for creating an authentic and relatable backstory. This foundational insight shapes their current motivations and worldview, adding depth to their narrative.

In my opinion, Creating a compelling backstory required to define the character's role and goals and details of their origin, upbringing, key life events, education & skills etc. While creating the backstory also mention characters' traits, strengths, and flaws and integrate it with the plot, revealing gradually.

What was their high school experience like? Did they have a best friend? When was the first time they fell in love? Continue plotting out these key events until you reach the present day. Not only will this exercise help you better understand your character’s thoughts, personality, and quirks, it will also give you a bird’s eye view of the formative events in your character’s life.

Base it off of personal experience. Stories mirror human lives. Or base it off of someone else’s experience. Try to explain things as you develop the story. Explain why the character is doing what they’re doing.

The most important part while sharing this story of failure, success coming out of comfort zone, making the audience or the reader to connect with. Making it in a way that the reader get the Feel of their own life and struggles they have been through. Making the reader feel that connect so that every breakthrough the writer or the story teller has felt like that of the reader.

There are two things that helps me write a great backstory: 1: Figuring out what compelled, motivated, or forced my character into their current situation. Death of a loved one? Shammed, teased, and ridiculed? Someone is after them, accused them of murder or theft, or they witnessed something they shouldn’t have. Or breaking out of their comfort zone. 2: Answer questions about who they are like, what foods are in their fridge? Who is their role model? What are they afraid of, or what has held them back? What’s on their bucket list? Both these tools help you to shape your characters personal and lead to creating a realistic and compelling backstory.
