Understanding your audience is always your first step. In life. When it comes to dashboards, the level of details, granularity or complexity are completely different whether your end user is a C-level or an attendant, for example. An analyst has to go through detailed information, whereas a board member doesn't even have time to talk about them - summarized information would be enough in this case. The ultimate goal is to deliver answers, not problems, to those who will consume your dashboard or report. That said, focus on who you're talking to and take your time to define the right questions with them.

I agree that the audience and their goals and objectives needs to be understood to deliver an engaging dashboard. Categorizing the user groups into persona groups helps to bring clarity to the goals . Data categorisation is also required for visual selection like those measured as percent or ratio then pie chart works best . Personalization to be enabled as it is necessary to enable users to modify the visual and data set as per their requirements.

How difficult is to understand your audience sometimes! Because each one can hava a way to analyze data, and if you don′t build a good datastorytelling, probably you will get just part of this audience.

Firstly, first of all you might understand if a dashboard will answer the question. Secondly, always analyse the digital maturity of audience. Finally, maybe a simple descriptive analyse can help the business.

The scope and objectives must be set in questions that will return real value to the company. If you invest time in making dashboards or implementing data science models using information that generate low value for the company, your efforts will not be recognized.

Adoption always an issue. Stakeholders at the time of creating reports ask for a number of metrics and then no longer want to use that report as it cause analysis paralysis. It also impacts the performance of the dashboards which further impedes the usage. Hence it is imperative that while designing the dashboard, the performance and the number of metrics are defined and measured before putting in production. It is on the BI team to maintain the balance between performance and metrics.

Taking into account all of the above, we can summarize our job in a few questions, as follows: 1- What's my audience? 2- What's the problem/question? 3- Does my job answer it? 4- Is it the best way to present/deliver it? 5- Does it add value to the business? 6- Does it work without me? 7- Is everything (information, labels, results) clear enough? 8- Can I explain it to my mom? Each question brings a particular and important point or our job and if we can't answer one of them, something is probably wrong. In this case, we need to step back to see where we need further efforts before moving on.
