How do you verify quality in your organization?

The top five priorities of quality work for a tire company shall be Safety, Quality (customer satisfaction), Productivity, Yield, and waste. The sequence shall not be changed. I learned this from my previous company leaders and it's really important!

Setting high standards for quality of care is of paramount importance in the health care sector. One unique way of improving quality is to include the voice of those we serve. Care should be patient centric, driven and directed by patient needs explicitly voiced from their end. So as part of improving and updating quality in healthcare we should establish and maintain forums for including the voice of the patient. This can be in the form of a patient council where they can contribute their perspectives, ideas, needs and interests.

My view on Verifying Quality in an organization is to assess the customer focus of the organization. Right from understanding the need ( stated and implied ), to measuring and tracking the progress / trend. Positioning vis-à-vis competition is another important factor to be aware of. All this sets the tone for Defining Objectives, Setting up Metrics and delving into data to identify improvement opportunities and implementation thereof is the logical sequence.

Any Forward looking & Progressive Organisation will never have Safety or Quality as Priority KPI..... Priorities can alter basis the Org performance hence Safety & Quality Need to be Non Negotiable Instruments. Their compliance score is Binary ie either 1 or 0.

Quality is always perceived and relative in nature whether it is for product Or service. Definitions are available from standards and industry. But it is important to understand context, customers and interested parties (stakeholders) to whom the product or service is being rendered. Considering the same, have quality by design and default ss the must goal / Objective. Verification of quality can be done through audits, inspection and quality control for comfort, but important metrics are NPS, Customer Satisfaction, repeat customers / orders, brand recall for quality, experience etc., Also quantification for continual improvement is a must and it is a journey .

What I have seen , you need to set the standards for measuring your quality goals. These standards, known as quality criteria, determine what's an acceptable level of quality for your product, service, or process. Make sure these criteria are clear, relevant, and consistent, reflecting the preferences of your customers and stakeholders. Utilize tools like quality specifications, checklists, or guidelines to define and maintain these quality criteria.

A) 3.4 Defect Per Million Opportunities (DPMO) is the goal. B) Industry standard 4 sigma level. C) Industry standard for process capability (Cpk) remains 1.33 which translates to item B above.

Just as important to the "WHAT" is being measured, is the "HOW", "WHEN", "BY WHOM", "WHERE" of the criteria. This can be defined in plans, procedures, workflows and may take the form of quality plans, inspection and test plans etc.

Setting the bar high means defining quality criteria that resonate with our stakeholders. Clear, relevant, and consistent standards are our compass, always pointing towards customer satisfaction. Based on my observations, you must establish the benchmarks for gauging your quality objectives. These guidelines, sometimes referred to as quality criteria, establish the acceptable caliber of your process, service, or product. Ensure that these standards accurately represent the preferences of your stakeholders and consumers and are clear, pertinent, and consistent. Utilize tools like quality specs, checklists, or guidelines to develop and manage these quality criteria.

NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports) and observation records are integral components of quality control activities. NCRs are used to address non-conformances, while observations are proactive measures to monitor and improve quality. Both contribute to the overall goal of ensuring products, processes, and systems meet quality standards and compliance requirements.

I totally agree that , it's time to put your quality plan into action through quality control. This is like the hands-on part of making sure everything is up to snuff. Quality control means keeping an eye on your product, service, or process as it's being made or after it's delivered. The goal is to spot and fix any hiccups, mistakes, or deviations from your quality criteria. To do this, use tools like inspections, tests, audits, or surveys to carry out and manage your quality control measures.

Inspection is often a lagging indicator resulting in late detection. Go for robust prevention with real-time Statistical Process Control (SPC). Leverage modern technology, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) & deep Machine Learning (ML) with automated SPC as poka-yoke method rather than rely on operators because Six Sigma is variation reduction while Lean is muda reduction. This may be easier said than done because many Black Belts may not know how to code in MERN as full-stack architect for automated SPC in real time while many software developers are not Black Belts to understand Six Sigma. Those limited few who can do both to connect all dots are the unicorns ??.

Implementing Quality Control sounds like “old newspaper” to me. Quality should be assured during your manufacturing process and not controlled at the end of the line. Process audits might be implemented instead any quality control.

Monitoring and measuring is a key activity throughout the product lifecycle and not as shown here; "during or after its production or delivery." and should replace or with and. Process controls using SPC and inspection techniques such as parametric release can be very effective economical methods of reducing COQ.

In current times measuring quality is not as simple as it was in Past If we understand the quality in terms of fulfilling the customer's expectations then we must measure the quality with respect to the three pillars of sustainability Economic sustainability Environmental Sustainability Social Sustainability So the customers have expectations with respect to all three pillars of Sustainability. We need to think in a broader manner to fulfill the customer's expectations and to develop some appropriate parameters to measure it.

Implement quality management tools and techniques such as statistical process control, quality improvement methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean, TQM), or ISO certifications to support your quality verification efforts.

Review the various weekly and monthly Quality reports such as weekly Rejected RFI, Log book entries, Internal NCR's etc and work on the gaps between the Planned Quality objectives and the actual results. Also Monthly Quality Management report and Quality index will help in identifying the gaps. Based on the Review , select any of the 7 basic Quality tools to define the problem, collect the data, Review the trends through chart and build a consensus among the team members to work towards the achievement of the required quality objectives.

A3, 8D, and DMAIC with why-why are the most effective tools to improve the quality processes. It helps you to dive into the root causes with clear actions to troubleshoot.

Six sigma tools are of great help to improve the quality process. Ideas to improve the process, a brain storming session to understand the root cause and future course of action helps a lot.

Implementing a culture of continuous improvement encourages employees to identify opportunities for enhancing quality and efficiency on an ongoing basis.

To enhance quality processes in the food industry, implement a robust quality management system, incorporating standards like HACCP. Regularly conduct thorough inspections and audits to identify areas for improvement. Invest in employee training to ensure compliance with hygiene and safety protocols. Embrace technology for real-time monitoring and data analysis. Solicit feedback from customers and stakeholders to continually refine processes, ensuring high-quality and safe food production.

Always try to simplify this presentation. Not everyone has technical knowledge on your process. Try using comparisons between before and after the improvement, and also use statistical data to predict a trending.

In the last step of quality management, effectively communicate the achieved quality results to stakeholders. Transparently share insights, improvements, and adherence to standards. Utilize clear and concise reporting methods that resonate with diverse audiences. Engaging stakeholders in the quality process fosters trust, demonstrates commitment, and ensures everyone is informed about the organization's dedication to maintaining and enhancing quality standards.

Customer Feedback: Customer input is invaluable in shaping quality objectives. Analyzing customer feedback can reveal areas where improvements are needed, which can then be translated into specific quality objectives. Remember that quality objectives are not static, they should be periodically reviewed and modified as necessary to adapt to changing circumstances, customer expectations, and organizational goals. Regular monitoring and evaluation are essential to ensure that your organization continues to deliver quality products or services.

Documented and communicated lesson learned throughout the organization also to be considered as one of very important steps to ensure that the same mistake should (shall) not happening again.

Quality in an organization can be verified by the system and processes deployed in manufacturing and quality control. It's about the awareness among the working level teams that how to ensure the best quality in the products. The most important is the culture within the organization that how top to bottom employees are focused towards the quality and the reliability of the product. Also, the mechanism in the organization to take customer feedback which actually helps to evaluate current status and support to improve further. Clubbing all the above points may reflect the Quality in Organization.

An additional approach to enhance the existing quality verification system involves incorporating a risk-based quality management strategy. The aim is to preemptively identify and address potential quality issues before they manifest, thereby optimizing both time and resources. This would involve conducting risk assessments at various stages of the quality control process. These assessments would pinpoint potential failure points and gauge the severity of such failures. The benefit of this approach promotes inter-departmental cooperation by involving multiple departments in risk evaluation and mitigation. In summary, integrating risk management within quality control making the system more predictive and efficient.

Inspect what you expect. Validate what is truly happening vs what you're imagining is happening. Sometimes the intended processes are not what is actually happening so it is important to verify the results/outcomes as well as ensuring interrater reliability.

Pull out your sixth sense and feel. There are so many wonderful tools that are powerful in the hands and minds of those that have a quality mindset. But they are also known tools that can be regurgitated by those that don’t. So first verify an organization embraces quality, by the smiles, the respect, the laughter when things are stressful, the being comfortable to say wait…don’t ship that. Let me check this first. When people care and they realize their products make a difference in the world there is not a challenge you can throw at them that they won’t crush! It’s time to take a mushy, feel good, soft skill pulse.

Central to the successful and widespread adoption of quality initiatives, is that they are designed into the processes they are intended to improve. When Quality initiatives are added on, they are viewed as more, or extra work. True success requires quality professionals to devise ways to build QI into processes. If successfully integrated, they'll be viewed differently, spread more effectively and adopted as the way business is done, everyday.
