How do you use warehouse equipment and tools safely and correctly?

Great Contributions! Warehouse equipment and tools are well utilise when :- 1. Used for the purpose for which they were ment for. 2. Cleaned Stored in a particular place after each use. 3. The manual and equipment data sheet are studied and possibly the user trained before the use of the equipment. 4. There's prohibition to use a faulty equipment. 5. There are enough space in the warehouse to use and store these tools. 6. Equipment are serviced regularly to avoid rust or tears. Etc

A safe work environment translates into more productive employees with less turnover. Keep areas clean and organized. Only certified personnel should operate equipment. Define forklift paths Supply and wear PPE Inspect equipment regularly Hold regular safety training Optimize warehouse layout

Fully agree. Also refresher training every year to keep everything fresh and front of mind. A signed document signed by the person using the equipment to show understanding.

Handling MHEs like FL, reach trucks etc requires specialized training & skills for safe operation along with to the point and specific safety knowledge on behavioral and occupational aspects such as work at height guidelines. These can only be attained by repetitive trainings and follow ups.

In my experience adequately training on PPE as well applicable areas of usage help maintain as safe work environment. Holding each other accountable as a team tends to maintain the safety standards.

I think Key here is "wear the appropriate PPE for the task" or, even better, adjust the PPE to that specific task.. Often enough I have seen warehouse people not using helmets because they fall off during work, get in the wat and thus... They take it off! A bump cap (re-inforced cap) in the warehouse might be a more suitable protection item then a helmet in this case.

Zero harm target or Incident/Accident-free target must be a set goal of any warehouse personnel and must be celebrated periodically, I believe this can motivate employes to serve as each brother's keeper during operations, to achieve Zero harm target.

One temptation could be that, after being trained, you think that, while others might use the required PPE, you can opt out if you don’t think it’s necessary. However, you should always correctly use the PPE necessary to ensure your safety.

In my experience when an employee has a demanding repetitive position, it is always best to cross train in other positions so they can be rotated to another position half way through there day. We want to maintain healthy employees as well as provide them the training and confidence to avoid MSD.

A great example in eliminating ergonomic risks was during my time at Schneider Electric. We would conduct cross functional ergonomic lift and move assessments at our DC and then identify applicable and appropriate equipment that could help eliminate any lifting (particularly repetitive lifting). Besides reducing the risk of injury, we also saw drastic improvement in productivity.

In my perspective, Ergonomic hazards result from repetitive tasks, awkward postures, and manual lifting, leading to musculoskeletal disorders. eg: Frequent manual lifting of heavy loads can strain workers’ backs and result in back injuries. Prolonged bending, reaching, or twisting can cause strain on the body and lead to discomfort and MSDs, Performing the same tasks repeatedly without sufficient breaks can cause strain on muscles and joints. So we must always support to maintain a healthy working environment for our employees by avoiding ergonomic practices.

Many of us spend lots of hours at work. If we are not proactively using ergonomic practices, injuries can sneak up on us when we are not expecting them.

As per my experience: Maintaining a daily, weekly, quarterly log sheet is one of the essential step in equipment maintenance, so that history of each spares can be tracked & maintenance can be forecasted by using this data in a longer run and the same data be horizontally deployed.

I agree. In addition I have always rotated my employees on preventative maintenance for specific machines each week. Some may have more knowledge than others, help educate newer employees and identify an item before an issue arises.

@saleem I do agree. however, no third party inspection replaces common sense... honestly, how long does it take to quickly address the situation AND materials before you start the works?

All tools applied for continuous use within a warehouse must pass through: - Usage tests by direct and indirect professionals; - Technical tests with professionals from the suppliers themselves to verify demand; - Capacity test so that there is a long guarantee in their use and less incidents with equipment breakdowns; - Professionals technically qualified to carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment. This ensures that the process has continuity and is not interrupted due to the lack of equipment necessary for the process from start to finish, which is the end customer service.

These are not should be prepared for internal or external audits. All must be current and must be run. These are crucial for the workers, customers, suppliers, plant, and environment.

In my experience, relevant ongoing training & education, coaching, empowerment, and ultimately developing team members creates the drive for continuous improvement. When team members feel valued, they buy in and intrinsically want to do better. That internal drive helps pave the road to smarter decisions, greater efficiency, compliance, and even coaching others when unsafe behavior is observed.

Following Safety Rules and Regulations is a main key fact in warehousing. Both employers and employees share the responsibility of maintaining a safe and healthy warehouse environment. Each party has specific roles to play in ensuring workplace safety.

Safety Rules and Regulations cannot replace common sense and experience... I did see it happen that truck drivers, wearing full PPE outside forgot to mention that their wife and kind were still in the cabin we here lifting over...

In my opinion, I believe Safety and Tools handling can be achieved only by conducting regular meetings. A weekly session must be held, where all participants are invited to share their thoughts freely. Regular Safety checks and Tools inspections as addressed during meetings is a guarantee for a safe workplace.

Freedom of speech is one of the Key items when addressing safety... it is not easy to tell colleagues that a unsafe situation happened on your watch... however, people should LEARN from other people's bad experiences...

It's also imperative to consider staff wellbeing to attain safe use of equipment and tools within the warehouse. In my experience, organizations would ensure all drivers and warehouse equipment operators undergo a mandatory health checkup once every year to ensure that they are fit, healthy and capable to operate machinery in a safe way.

Sobre EPE, gostaria de salientar que em alguns casos tais equipamentos apenas amenizam situa??es de riscos, sendo assim pode ser?usado?como complemento o?EPC, equipamentos de prote??o coletiva, como; sinaliza??es?de seguran?a, ventila??o, enclausura??o acústica, prote??o de colunas em casos de opera??o com empilhadeiras, já vi também sistemas de desativa??o de máquinas através de sensores de movimento. Na quest?o ergon?mica, doen?as por movimentos corporal; em minha experiência já tive a oportunidade de trabalhar em empresas que disponibilizam ginástica laboral como parte de seu cronograma de atividades, eu procurava aproveitar ao máximo, mas, infelizmente percebia que muitos colegas de trabalho optavam por se abster de tal benefício.
