I, by nature, have a loud voice. I usually do not need a mic. However, I have learned one thing over the years. A loud voice does not always capture a person's attention or retain it. I have learned not to speak loudly. More than that, though, at key points, I will drop my voice. In fact--almost to a whisper. Try it. You will find people remember what you say!

In public speaking, it is not just tone and volume that matter, a related component of a good speech is in cadence. Whether giving a speech on economic development or when participating in a political debate, the cadence of your voice can communicate many things. Seriousness, light-heartedness, comedic effect, nervousness, and passion can all be communicated by not just the tone of your speech, but in the timing of your words. To control cadence, you must learn to breathe, be calm, and find your rhythm. No one starts their public speaking career without nervousness, but practice makes perfect, and you learn to control your voice by using it regularly.

3 How to adapt your tone and voice

Your tone and voice are not fixed or static. You can and should adjust them according to the feedback and reaction from your audience. Pay attention to the verbal and non-verbal cues of your audience, such as their questions, comments, nods, smiles, frowns, or yawns. One of the things I've learned through my own public speaking, is that variety counts. In the same presentation you might vary your pace of speech (slow to speedy), your volume (quiet to loud), and use tone to convey emotion. Too much all in the same "palette" means that you run the risk of your audience switching off from you and zoning out so then not hearing you make your killer point.
