In doing training on for instance Saving and having persons see the value of saving from a young age and saving consistently I tell my own story. When I was younger I thought that I could put off saving and started to save later on in life. But when I show the numbers if I started saving from my first job and saved consistently and compared it to when I actually started saving I would be in a much better place financially and would be better prepared for retirement. Putting aside 10% of your salary every pay check is important. It is important to tell one’s own story even though it’s not a perfect story but it can always help someone not make the same mistakes.

When I do presentations I bear in mind that some persons are visual learners and visual aids may assist them in understanding and grasping the material better. I ensure that ath visual aids are appropriate, simple and catches the eyes. Using the saving example again, when I lecture to students about saving I do it in the form of forming the habit of saving while at school so when they start to work it becomes a habit. I use charts for persons to see how much can be saved weekly, monthly and yearly by saving $1.00 a day. I also use charts to show persons the use and value of compound interest.

I find that using story telling draws in the audience, it captivated the audience and there are usually lots of questions and comments. It makes the topic more relatable to the audience. Using visual aids help persons to understand the message better and clearer. It may even help the audience to retain the material and for a long period of time.

When delivering financial literacy sessions to mature audiences I use a different approach. This audience is direct and to the point. They do not want stories and visual aids. They want to know what they can do to improve their financial situation. At the end of the session I distribute leaflets to support the topic as this audience would prefer to read and get information.
