How do you use simulations in risk management training?

My experience in the Marines around Simulations and Live Training was second to none. Live firing exercises add gravitas to training - as the consequences can be catastrophic. It teaches deep risk analysis and modelling to validate safety whilst maintaining as realistic a scenario as possible. Simulation ammunition was also a powerful training aid. The scenarios could be played out with measurable metrics and results. The stress of the training lends itself towards an accurate outcome. The training and modelling treads the line between managing the risk of harm/realised risk and realism. When the line is trodden carefully it can be powerful for planning and SOP development to mitigate future risk.

Role play is the key. However recording the role play and then playing that recording for the entire group to observe and comment can be super beneficial

I use simulations in risk management training to train the desired response of learners. The goal is to teach learners to pay attention to specific numbers/events/reports/triggers that indicate a higher probability of risk materializing or risk already materializing. Then respond according to the procedure and when a procedure is not in place in a manner that will prevent risk from materializing or if a risk has already materialized in a way that will minimize damage.

Simulations can be used in RM training through design of practical risk cases for application of risk management practice for the target audience

In war games, why does Red team usually win? Because Blue must defend 360°. Worse, is held back by status quo. Machine Learning is better than classic Red, playing even further outside the limits. Both more likely to crash OR to win brilliantly. Let a thousand simulations bloom!

It's important to inform the simulation with a realistic set of risks and issues, both minor items and a few severe but plausible scenarios.. This also helps assess whether risk appetite statements are clear, test whether risk controls are operationally effective (albeit within the limits of the simulation), and evidence chain of decisions and actions, especially where the risk ownership is blurred or jointly owned.

Effective simulations are where new information is gained that either underpins existing assumptions and assessments or challenges them to the contrary with a plausible fact pattern.. Where the null hypothesis is defined well to reject the null.. Failure to reject the null is also useful information but not usually as useful as a carefully designed assessment leading to a rejection of the null..
