How do you use sales rejections as an opportunity to learn and improve?

The foundation of all the valuable analysis above is starting with a heart of service and a sincere desire to better your prospect's current reality. That sincerity gives you an overwhelming ability to connect *emotionally* with your prospect and places them in an environment where they can safely, confidently and enthusiastically make their own decision to acquire your product or service. This goes for everyone, but for newer and younger salespeople - rejection isn't always "no". You may not truly be a good fit for your prospect when you meet them, but you can always go back. (I've been physically led out of sales calls, planned ones, and some of those people are still clients and friends). Check off all of the classic "sales boxes" like are mentioned here first. But then, think about the situation... Was the person having a bad day? Did they just have an unpleasant meeting with a boss or colleague? And if you don't know, please please don't make up a reason for them. I adore Cintas for training me over two decades ago "no usually means not right now". Don't be pushy, but don't just quit!

The first thing you should do is determine, objectively, if you are dealing with a qualified lead. Many of us tend to have "happy ears" when dealing with an opportunity and continue with the sales process even when the prospect doesn't have a compelling reason to buy, or lacks the budget and authority to do so. If you've been rejected by a qualified lead, be honest with yourself. Usually, there isn't just one thing that went wrong, but a mix of reasons. Ask for feedback, review the steps you took during the process (which should be well documented), and come up with conclusions and adjustments for future opportunities. And of course, keep the relationship alive, as many times a "no" is just a step in the process of a future "yes".

Asking the hard questions is critical for improving your skillset. Sometimes the reason(s) are completely unrelated to you or your performance, but sometimes they are, and the only way to find out the answer is by asking. Don't ask with the expectation of changing their decision and don't beat around the bush while asking. Simply look the prospect in the eye and calmly ask what was missing, and then just sit back and wait for the answer in a respectful and receptive manner. More often than not, they will not only provide great information about their business decisions/motivations, but more importantly, you'll walk away having made an impression on the buyer, and you'll likely be the first person they call when the time is right.

Not only does asking for feedback on why a product or service is not for them help you refine your future sales presentations but, can also provide the opportunity of another chance to change the client’s point of view on purchasing. If you can tailor the product or service closer to their needs based on the feedback provided, you have another chance of making the sale in a non aggressive manner. Asking for feedback is a very powerful sales tool and not just a diagnostic one.

A couple of decades of being told "no" has shown me that reviewing how well I listened in a meeting, first sales call or twentieth, will show me how I won or lost the business every time. I fancy myself a great listener and a great question-asker, but the after call self review (if you're truly being honest with yourself) will open your eyes to so much that you did right, along with much to work on for the future! Many times, I was thinking for the prospect or client, or I just wasn't truly paying attention.

Chat with colleagues or mentors to get their take, too. There’s also a ton of great tools out there that can help you see the bigger picture of your sales journey. It’s like fine-tuning an instrument; the more you tweak and adjust, the better your results will be.

It is essential to be on a learning process. By doing so, you can contribute with best practices in sales. By learning from seniors, colleagues, or others, you will find new ways to approach a client or a subject. On the other hand, by joining seminars, courses, online communities, etc., you will always be one step ahead of your competitors. The thing is, while you keep learning things, you become more flexible and more passionate about your job!

The ability to learn from failure is an important component of a successful career. My journey started when I lost a SQL design and configuration deal - due to price. 2 weeks later, my customer lost their job when SQL went down and took their e-commerce business down as well. I took accountability upon the realization that if I had a better skill base of negotiation and overcoming price objections, I may have won the deal, saved a job and avoided a financial loss for my customer. With a lesson learned, my efforts to improve skills paid off, my sales performance improved, and I went on to share these skills with many others. Always take into consideration the impact of a lost sale to others, as well as yourself.

I have a large whale size prospect that I've been rejected by at least a half dozen times over the last 4 years. This last go at them, something finally clicked and it got their attention. We're now moving forward and it's a HUGE win. Throughout the years of being told "not interested" or "we're focusing on other areas", etc. I never once heard that as a "No". It just gave me time to step back, fine tune my message, figure out new questions to ask and it has finally paid off.
