I’m not sure that this addresses why they are important. The main reason is because OER’s are free and by definition supposed to be fully accessible to teachers and learners. This is especially critical as funds for supplemental materials are incredibly limited in schools and typically are paid from the pockets of teachers. Having access to OERs give teachers choice of how they address learning goals in their classroom.

The most used resource that I’ve experienced have come from OER commons and this article is correct in saying that they need to be vetted carefully for accuracy, reliability and adherence to state standards. As user generated OERs, there is a high probability of encountering questionable sources but this is where teachers come in handy as they are able to rate and in certain cases, improve and share improved sources.
