I am a big fan and advocate of gamification. One of the areas I love to explore is personalisation. Another area, closely linked to this, is taking people on a journey from novice to mastery. So, start as simple as possible and ask for a little (i.e. few details) as possible, and build up from there. Bonus tip: Instead of competition against others, utilise 'personal best'. We can all compete against ourselves - it's a fairer and more accessible alternative

This superficial mimicry, often by those without game production experience, might explain the waning popularity of gamification. More emphasis should be on designing and conquering challenges, not mere transaction-based rewards like a free coffee. Gamification delivered well is really powerful. We tap into that feeling of exploration and fun through well designed games loops. Done badly we just end up with “game porn”, taking an un engaging learning experience and make it take longer.
