We so often talk about empathy for users in our case studies and work, but my favorite go-to is building shared empathy with my team, in order to more successfully negotiate and get things done together. Understanding each partner's motivations and drivers helps to find common ground solutions and build shared trust. When a partner knows you are empathetic to their situation, it is much easier to frame the conversation around working together against a problem, rather than against one another.

2 Define the problem and the desired outcome

Another essential skill of design thinking is problem definition, which means framing the challenge or opportunity in a clear and actionable way. As a leader, you can use problem definition to focus your efforts, communicate your vision, and inspire your team and stakeholders. You can do this by using tools such as problem statements, how might we questions, point of view statements, and value propositions. By defining the problem and the desired outcome, you can clarify the scope, criteria, and purpose of your project or initiative, and set the direction for ideation.

No matter how obvious the project work is, even when the entire team already has an idea of what they want to build, I make the case for a problem framing exercise. It lets design, research, and product functions all verbalize the people, needs, and jobs we are solving for so that we are on the same page. We understand the business impact together, and we know what success will look like. By taking the time to do this up front, we avoid misalignments down the road and a build a shared understanding together that helps facilitate team cohesion.

3 Ideate possible solutions and alternatives

A core skill of design thinking is ideation, which means generating a variety of ideas and options to address the problem or opportunity. As a leader, you can use ideation to foster creativity, innovation, and diversity of thought in your team and stakeholders. You can do this by using techniques such as brainstorming, mind mapping, sketching, storyboarding, and SCAMPER. By ideating possible solutions and alternatives, you can explore different possibilities, perspectives, and scenarios, and identify the most promising and feasible ones.

In addition to obvious approaches, I like to have my teams map out other potential angles and solutions to comparatively evaluate. The easiest way to do this is physical sketching via whiteboard or pen and paper. I opt for diagrammatic reasoning at this state to move quickly and stay at the conceptual level, without getting bogged down in unnecessary details.
