How do you use data to back up your message?

They say data is the new oil. I would agree. However, like oil, is needs to be refined. It needs to fuel sound arguments and lubricate key hypothesises.

Data in its rawest form is typically not interesting. It’s how it’s presented that makes it both relevant and engaging. First thing to do is make sure your data doesn’t just support your message but enhances it. I always look at data as part of my message, presentation or speech. Data is language that we get to dress up for our audiences and readers. From emojis to graphs to illustrations, seek alternative and creative ways to make a pop.

One should also, always provide a citation for any data provided. Too often people provide numbers, percentages, graphs, maps, etc. without the source from which they sued or collected the data. On that note, it is of equal importance for everyone to take note of the source of the data. Was the data created by a partisan organisation with a means to persuade, a non-partisan organisation, a peer reviewed science journal article, news source (if so, does it provide links to sources used for its data)?

Data can be good and it can be bad. Data is collecting knowledge from different aspects. Use situations where you connect with the data and talk about it.

Data not only needs to be refined it must be defined. Simplicity requires you to focus on the numbers that matter. Relevancy is where matter intersects with reality.

Simplifying data in storytelling is crucial because it transforms complex information into accessible insights. As attention spans shorten, concise visuals and clear data points become viral in capturing audiences' interest. By removing jargon and unnecessary details, the message becomes easily digestible, enhancing understanding across diverse backgrounds. It empowers individuals to make informed decisions, fostering engagement and advocacy. Simplified data-driven narratives are easily shareable, making them go viral, spreading knowledge, and driving meaningful impact in today's information-saturated world.

Visualisation is key. Crowd data on a PowerPoint and eyes will wander. Another pie chart with slices so thin they aren’t tasty has no appetite. If possible use pictures to illustrate momentum, flatlining and spikes. It’s more dramatic.

Telling a story visually is a vital skill because it transcends language barriers, engaging diverse audiences effortlessly. Images evoke emotions and create memorable experiences, making the narrative more impactful. In a fast-paced world, visual storytelling captures attention swiftly, fostering better understanding and retention. It ignites imagination, encourages empathy, and leaves a lasting impression, making it an essential skill for effective communication in any field.

I imagine a graduating class of high schoolers and a jagged line to illustrate the abandonment of the status quo. Or I see an empty university courtyard. My story is rarely about the cause and more about the effect.

This classic book delves into principles and techniques for presenting data effectively through compelling visuals. It offers practical insights on data visualization, including charts, graphs, and maps, while emphasizing clarity and accuracy. By studying this book, you can gain valuable skills to communicate complex data in a visually engaging and informative manner.
