How do you use attention-grabbing techniques in your instructor-led training?

Use a painting as a lead slide that helps to convey the point(s) you want to get across in the presentation. A beautiful image can summarize your presentation better than several slides of words. Use more images and less words throughout a slide deck coupled with stories and examples to grab attention and illustrate your main ideas. Impromptu networking - get them to discuss: “What big challenge do you bring to this gathering? What do you hope to get from and give this group or community?” ...and to write the answers on the wall. That way, they are immediately the focus of each other's attention and I'm in the margins. It helps them recognize that I'm only in the room to help them discover how lead within their own specific situational contexts, rather than an "expert" telling them what to do. And that they are likely to learn much more from each other than they are from me.

Color can be a big attention-getter and mood setter. Make sure that the colors you use introduce the viewer to the energy that your course will bring to them. You don't have to use all the colors on every slide afterwards, but to be consistent, be sure you repeat the colors throughout the lesson to gain some cohesiveness. Artists would refer to this as the principle of art called unity. One way to do this is to have pieces of your introductory graphic scattered throughout the lesson slides.

Relating teaching topics to real life examples from your practise or day to day life scenarios makes learning fun and helps retain information Imagery is another strong tool, where students imagine the scenario and thsts helps them to relate to the topic and understand better. On more monotonous topics , attention grabbing fun activities e.g. solve a puzzzle on the topic , or comment in "one word" ensures your students are with you all the time! Occasionally small class challenges and group tasks are also a great way to retain focus while building healthy compitition. AV presentations should avoid monotonous text ...videos, animations, sound effects and humour helps retain attention:)

Before I make myself an entertainer to attract attention, I would rather listen to the young people. Very few people do that and that's why it's certainly surprising for them and so I have their attention.

In my point of view, make them (participants) own it, relate the objectives to their experiences, and what they can gain/get from learning it with you.

An example of this is using the phrase: “repeat/say it with me…” This also pushes participants to really participate to your talk even in simple way.

Al hacer que los alumnos reflexionen sobre lo que ya saben, se les invita a explorar cómo sus experiencias anteriores se conectan con el tema actual. Esto no solo les proporciona un marco de referencia, sino que también les permite ver la relevancia y aplicabilidad del contenido nuevo en su contexto personal. Además, al estimular el recuerdo, los estudiantes se convierten en participantes activos en su propio proceso de aprendizaje.

A través del enlace entre un recuerdo y el conocimiento que el participante está adquiriendo, ayuda mucho a qué dicho conocimiento queda presente atado a un recuerdo, ayuda mucho al aprendizaje de manera práctica ya que el capacitador demuestra como pudo sacar provecho de la información que está adquiriendo en la situación planteada del recuerdo.

If using PowerPoint, reading verbatim off a slide, with no amplification of information or customization in delivery will serve to waste a learner’s time. Phones, pet words or phrases from the instructor, or the clock on the wall will gather more attention.

Keep in mind the environment in which you present. If you're presenting data, keep it simple and easy to read. What you see on a laptop may not be easily read when presenting the same information on a screen to an audience. Be ruthless when it comes to text on a slide; cull as much as possible. The audience will read the words more quickly than you can speak them. When they are reading, they are not listening to you. If they are not listening to you, you've lost their attention at that moment.

Visual aids can help to break up the text-heavy content and make the material more accessible and memorable. Provide feedback: Providing feedback on learners' progress can help to keep them engaged and motivated. This feedback can take the form of assessments, quizzes, or personal feedback from the instructor.

Make it visual/ easy to digest, don’t overload the presentation with information. Rule of thumb for me is: if you can read it in a textbook, don’t put it (unless summarized or simplified). Make it a point to ask yourself if the slide will be important for the audience.

Focus on 1 message per slide. This means you will need more slides, but it also means that you will not suffer from 'The Redundancy Effect' where more content interferes with each other and your learners take away less learning. If presenting data, use contrasting colours on the key numbers that you want to bring attention to. Don't focus so much on your PowerPoint that you forget that you are the presentation. Focus on you and connecting with the audience in how you are communicating with them

Ensure learners have a resource which can remind them of their learning months down the line. This ensures they will be able to access the messages you have given in the flow of work. Ensure training has the chance to apply what they are learning in a safe setting where they can receive feedback and gain confidence when taking it back to their roles.

When appropriate, I ask participants to tell a difficult situation they face in their real life regarding the subject of learning. Then we collectively choose one situation of them to be the subject of application throughout the course. At each stage, I ask participants how to apply what we just learnt on this situation to improve it. At the end of the course, the one who told the situation & also all other participants, had solved it completely on their own & made a tangible progress on how they think they can solve similar situations. It works perfectly.

Por medio de los comentarios de los participantes sobre el tema que se está tratando, ayuda a identificar por parte del capacitador quienes de los asistentes están prestando la atención adecuada y adquiriendo el conocimiento, y quienes solo están presentes en cuerpo pero no mentalmente.

In my experience, using a combination of these methods provided a comprehensive understanding of learner progress and instructional impact. For example, incorporating real-world scenarios in assessments can highlight practical application of skills, enhancing both engagement and learning effectiveness.

One of the most efficient tools to help retention is relevant stories. People can easily recall stories more than subjects. Finding the most relevant & matching story to the situation is the challenge. Sometimes a comic can do the same.

I often find that rather than sharing successful case studies, it is more interesting and memorable for the learners when I share horror stories of business ventures and marketing activities gone wrong.
