I recommend looking up the specific model of computer you have and looking at the memory specs. Another good way is to just power off the computer, and open it up and see what it has. Some PC models will outright say what the maximum memory is. However, some users over the years have been able to push the limit past what the manufacturer states.

If it POSTS and the OS reports the correct amount of memory, you’re fine in my experience. You can go the extra mile by running tests, I just have never needed to do it. If it doesn’t POST, reseat the memory.

To properly optimize RAM through the use of XMP or DOCP, memory modules must have identical timings; otherwise, employment of this technique will prevent a system from completing a Power-On Self-Test (POST). Additionally, for operating in dual channel mode, one must ensure that the memory modules are installed in identical pairs, in the correct slots. (For systems with more than two memory module slots, this often times means that they are both installed in even-numbered or odd-numbered slots).

Note that faster boot times are sort of a misnomer. Faster boot times due to an increase in RAM is as a result of less drive "thrashing", which is essentially an increase in drive activity. Nowadays this doesn't matter as much unless there is a significant number of items loading compared to a base installation of an operating system; and this is the case since modern systems are now being pre-equipped with 8 gb of ram or more. Additionally, memory temperatures are generally not monitored as system boards and memory modules are not equipped with the necessary equipment to perform said monitoring.

For slower notebook pc, eg. AMD Ryzen 5 3500U cpu; 4gb soldered ddr4 ram + 4gb ddr4 ram on expansion slot, 8gb in total ram, it was running slowly. By adding 16gb ram to it's only expansion slot, 20gb ram in total ram size, I do experience slightly smoother performance. This is a slower pc, in fact I had disabled most startup app, only 1 startup app was running.
