Consistency will always win. You practicing regularly by solving coding challenges, working on personal projects, and contributing to open-source projects will always be a good way to improve over time. I'll want to add, I learned programming from books, your style might be different but don't hesitate digging through programming books in your niche, you'll be amazed by what you'll uncover. Then practicing documentation will deepen your understanding for improvement. Networking too is king, you participating in forums, attending meetups, and engaging with the developer community for knowledge sharing is a habit you'll want to get used to. And don't forget to always seek feedback on your code to improve your coding style.

It's especially difficult to find time to upgrade your skills while you're working in a job, so plan to set aside some time every week (ideally a few hours!) to upskilling through courses, challenges, personal projects, and even teaching! Taking part in activities like this (even while employed) is what separates great engineers from the rest.

Wherever you are in your career, try and keep working on yourself. Your projects, ideas that interest you. It is difficult to share projects from your workplace publicly. It is also likely, that workplace projects have a structure which limits your ability to experiment and fail. The best way to keep learning: keep working on your projects. This allows you to get exposure to various technologies, problem scenarios and collaboration opportunities that may not happen at work. There are plenty of resources online to help you get started. Build from scratch, take inspiration from other projects, contribute to open source, recreate online guides (if that helps you get past the initial friction). Keep digging.

I personally believe that engaging yourself in side projects is a great way to enhance your skills. These projects enable you to experiment with various technologies, gaining hands-on experience and deepening your expertise in different areas.

My personal projects are 100% the reason I am the programmer I am today , my school and work projects laid down foundational knowledge and taught me better code on a structure and scalability level but learning new paragidms, tools, libraries were all the product of my side projects. The projects themselves don't even have to be super complex it's about applying the new tool or knowledge to a working example. Sometimes that knowledge lies dormant, i've gone YEARS without introducing a certain concept or tool to a project and then all of a sudden I encounter a project that requires extensive Delegate usage, or REQUIRES LINQ Queries, or simply makes me revisit something I haven't thought about since college. Personal Projects upgrade you.

In addition to starting a new project from scratch or participating in hackatons, you can also contribute to open source projects (e.g. on GitHub). It's easier than you might think it is, and depending on the project it might really bump up your skills of developing enterprise-level software (yes, you need a well organized project for this).

Keep doing passion projects on the side. Try to build stuff you want to build. Share it with the world. Do #buildinpublic and share your journey on social media. Potential hirers or investors may find your work valuable and reach out to you.

Great advice, BUT: be careful to not just read the code, but do that on purpose. Set a goal, such as "understand how this works", "find where this value comes from", or even "find a bug" (the latter is probably best of all). Aimless reading won't teach you much; by setting a goal you'll be able to focus on the code much better - which is important when that's not your code.

Immerse yourself in different codebases by actively reading and reviewing code. Participate in code reviews within your team or on platforms like GitHub. Analyzing and understanding code written by others exposes you to diverse coding styles, best practices, and problem-solving strategies. This iterative learning process enhances both your technical and collaborative skills.

Choose your mentor correctly, do not allow any unskilled person to review your code. Follow the people on Git Hub who have built something helpful. Ask them for review and improvement of your code.

Find your rabbit role! Be like Alice in wonderland, there are so many incredibly projects on Gitlab/Github/etc Find one that tickles your fancy and go all in! (set an alarm to remind you to get out though). As professional experienced developers we speak a language (or several) that reveals a world unlike any other, explore what other people are making and join in their ventures!

Always keep learning. I read constantly, test out new ideas, discuss with peers, attend conferences, share what I know, and grow from the feedback. I often learn more from failure than successes. I long ago acknowledged I don’t know what I don’t know. Always keep learning.

During my career I have found podcasts, newsletters, conferences and user groups to be very beneficial in keeping my "saw" sharp. Staying up to date on the latest trends requires effort but the payoff can far exceed that effort.

This was far more practical than anything I had learned in my degrees. And eventually I was able to meet other interested people, which expanded my personal network. Find a mentor. If you are experienced, offer to be one. Teaching others is one of the best forms of learning. It forces you to think from First Principles, anticipate questions and really understand how to answer them. What you may put off for yourself, you will not for others. I have found I am forced to look for and understand answers much better when I need to teach someone about a topic. As they say, if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough". Teaching also involves honing your communication skills. It is an important one to have when working in teams and ensuring career growth. Technical knowledge will only take you so far if you cannot work with a team.

One of the things we teach kids is “Learn to share”. Tweak that a bit and you have “Share to learn”. When we train others or share your knowledge more often than not we ensure that we are learning the concepts better and in-depth. And while you share your knowledge be receptive to your audience’s feedback and perspective.

Subscribe to channels and groups and read blogs from sources like dev.daily 4. Join webinars and online conference organised by top players like Google, Goto, Frontend Nation, Kong, etc 5. Anyone can follow instructions on how to display "hello world" on a screen. But what's next? Display a text in a different color. Now add some animation to the text. What if I want to apply the same thing in other places (reusability)? What if the text should be dynamic (maybe server integration)? Every step requires learning something new and there are multiple ways to achieve every step. It can be overwhelming to try to learn everything at once. Try tackling small and specific challenges incrementally and expand your foundation piece by piece. Understanding your options and mastering each step through the various tips from the article helps you become a better programmer over time.

Write articles on your approach towards solving a problem: 1. What challenges you faced? 2. How did you solve them? 3. What resources you looked into? 4. Future directions - if applicable. Not only will you be able to articulate your thought process, you will be able to help others facing a similar problem. Additionally, you improve your writing and doc. skills. Programmers are really bad at writing, myself included.

Get our of your "comfort coding zone": - Dive into side projects, to something voluntary for a NGO or social community. - Dive into the open source community. Assist/Correct/Hunt Bugs in the code of others! - Educate, teach and train other individuals in coding By doing this, you will constantly reflect your own habits, extend and train your skills and upgrade your portfolio. You need something as a "result", someone to give you input and someone to ask you questions to what are you doing or how things are working to get to the next level.

5 years ago I started a project called Dynamic DCS (DDCS). The purpose of this project was to get better in node.js express, get better with react, and pickup mongoDB skills. 1. Find something that is fun and you would love to do on your free time. Mine happen to be Eagle Dynamics, DCS World is a fully VR supported fighter jet combat simulator. It is incredible. 2. Find an issue that you could solve. Mine happened to be lackluster Multi-player gameplay. The targets on the ground didn't move. 3. Solved it by creating an engine that would hold state of the war between server restarts, turn it into a strategy game (think Starcraft with first person simulated fighter jets), the system is still going strong and I still love to work in it!

Read best practices for the language you are working in, either books or online material. For example, if you're working in C++, you MUST read the "Effective C++" books by Scott Meyers. All of them! Then apply what you've learned in your projects.
