How do you update your career research as your goals change?

The need for change is the catalyst for growth. In your career, the need normally stems from either a change of: → environment (company) → activity (job) Here are 3 questions to help determine which one it is, why, and what to do about it. 1. Which one: ask yourself if you would be happier doing something different here, or doing this job somewhere else? 2. Why: dig deep as to what's behind the dissatisfaction. Is it the pay? Lack of recognition? Boredom? Feeling unappreciated? 3. What to do about it: build a strategy framework. Make a detailed list of your ideal setting – the company vibes, tasks, and related emotions. The clearer the picture, the easier to take the next steps & get back to your career happy. #careermanagement

One thing I found helpful is to interrogate yourself about your passion and liking. Also, seeking a career change consultant or mentor for guidance.

Research is the key here! You can listen to podcasts or TED talks, read online articles or industry publications, or you can reach out and have a quick chat with folks in your career path on LinkedIn. Writing a pros and cons list should be next on your list after Research. All of these things can help guide you in your career path or if you're planning a career pivot.

It would help if you considered exploring emerging industries or technologies that might not have been as prevalent initially when choosing your career path. For instance, if you have a background in marketing, you could research and consider opportunities in fields like artificial intelligence marketing, virtual reality marketing, or blockchain marketing. These emerging areas may offer unique career prospects and the chance to be at the forefront of innovation in your industry.

A valuable perspective to consider is leveraging the gig economy or freelance opportunities to test your assumptions and validate your findings. Instead of committing to a full-time internship or job, you could take on freelance projects or short-term contracts in your desired field. This allows you to gain practical experience, build a portfolio, and assess whether the work aligns with your career goals before making a long-term commitment. It also provides flexibility and exposure to different aspects of your chosen field.

A resume is a living document, so it must be flexible. As our careers evolve, as we venture into different career directions, enhance our skills, and gain expertise and experience in various fields, it's essential to adapt and update our resumes and other career documents accordingly. Moreover, while doing so, an individual might have an opportunity to review their entire career history and conduct a personal SWOT analysis.

Clearly articulate your 30-second career aspiration by listing desired location, industry, job function and organizations and post on your social media channels and offer your network a referral bonus for anyone that connect you to a position that you ultimately take. Leverage the network.
