The critical aspect is to define the timeline of the event and when it first started to occur. Then, you should focus on understanding if this happening for everyone or subset of the users. Is this intermittent or always happen for all requests. Today, IAM systems are the backbone and usually very robust and any issue in IAM system would be felt for more than one application or API. Lastly, try to understand what changed in the environment - new release, patching, network, cloud, secrets etc. This process of elimination will help you get to root cause faster.

I have come to the realization that troubleshooting, in its nature, is a combination of creativity and logic. A step by step analysis of the process and what it is supposed to be doing and pinpointing where it goes wrong is the key. Crawling through logs is becoming a thing of the past with the up and coming AI technologies that automatically find anomalies and can tie them to root causes.

This is a nice sentiment, but you can literally build repeatable tests that very clearly demonstrate the issue only to have an application owner shut it all down with a key stakeholder by saying "there is no problem". Once you think you have the problem solved test it with one identity. Then test it with another identity where the new rule or code is not supposed to do anything. Do not just think you have it solved and apply it across all of the org's identities or you can end up making the problem worse.

Enhancing performance involves clever strategies: cache data to cut down on repeat requests, batch processes to reduce calls, introduce throttling to avoid system overload, and apply pagination for large data handling. These steps ensure a smoother, more scalable IAM API integration.

Get your metrics so that you can know when and how much you have improved. Then I always start with Algorithms and Architectures. Often times approaches that work at smaller scales don't work are larger ones and approaches that work on prem don't work across the cloud. For example, when an API requires that you pull all of the data and then filter it locally, you spend needless amount of time and bandwidth, if your Cloud tenant has one thousand identities, you probably don't notice the time it takes. But if your tenant has one hundred thousand, you definitely will. When an API requires one call per identity I look for look for bulk download and upload options sometimes having to use reporting interfaces.

After solving an issue, I document everything. What went wrong, the steps to diagnose it and the solution. Records keeping is great, but it's a guide for anyone encountering a similar issue.
