How do you troubleshoot power and battery issues in the field?

After confirming everything is plugged on a working outlet, I would check for faulty battery driver. On a Windows device, run a software update.

If you have a detachable battery, disconnect the battery, make sure it's clear of anything blocking the connectors, then reseat the battery.

In the case of surge strips, also make sure they are actually turned on - some rocker switches have no indicator lights or markings, or the LED inside them could be burnt out.

A lot of the newer laptops charge by a USB-C style charger. The problem is they put multiple USB-C ports on the laptop. I've found that only one is used to change the laptop and the rest are only for devices. Next to the ports are symbols and only one usually has the lightning bolt symbol for charging.

Two Cases - Battery or Direct power Battery: Identify the charge potential in battery through battery level indicator, try connecting charger for more confirmation. If runs for few seconds and off might be low battery. If Batter power is good, press and hold power button for 60s even after complete turn off -shoudn't turn on until your next key stroke. in my experience, for power adapter , just feel if the power adapter is warm. Warm / hot means there is electric running thru Cold - means not power coming thru

If can, battery healthavailable in BIOS based on OEM & firmware. Observe duration: Charge battery to 100% and let it discharge to near 10%. AC Power consumption(online): If not able to charge quick while using system, Symptom of low battery life. Report : Get the report in Windows using powercfg / batteryreport in CMD or Run Prompt (search for run) file will be in same folderpath of command line

In my experience: -Remove the battery and plug the adapter to power to check if there is power signal into the device -For the battery, connect it to device, if it doesn't charge after sometimes, it means the battery is not working. The opposite is the case if it is charging, the battery adapter may just be mis-behaving..

You can also physically inspect some of the components - adapter cable might be frayed or damaged, the charging head might be bent or chipped, or the charging port could be obstructed or show signs of an electric fault, like a small burn mark.

Check for loose setup of system connections. Remove as much as intermediate connections and test them induvidually. If possible check with other supportive working appliances for their outcome.

Inspection of components should include a careful evaluation of the usb-c style charging port and/or its connection to the motherboard. I am finding that the usb-c charging port is more easily damaged than the legacy style round charging port. If the adjacent power light usually provided is not lighting up, try carefully moving the usb-c cable forward and backward or up and down slightly to see if it lights up and the laptop recognizes the connection and indicates that the battery is charging. Damage here requires a technician.

Some manufacturers offer tools to download patches, optimise configuration and updates specific to your make and model. For instance Dell off an app called Support Assist to make this easy. Try this prior to restarting your device. Ensure you create a backup onto a usb stick prior to resetting your pc.

Some manufacturers of Windows laptops such as Lenovo include a pinhole reset button on the bottom of the laptop. It is the equivalent of removing the battery and reinstalling it for the laptop. This can be helpful if your machine is stuck between sleep states.

If Not powering on: Power flush the system, by press and holding device power on key fo 60s eventually drain the power saved to resume from sleep mode. If turned on run OS diagnostics tool. Check and update drivers-BIOS... from OEM like Dell, lenovo. Check for if any error indication lights or beep codes, can cross refer from OEM Documentation.

Before the operation, Turn off connecting or nearby relative power supply. Suit up with insulators like rubber gloves and foot wear to prevent conduction. Keep the setup or area earthed to grounded. Careful with Sharp edges and tools.

It is also beneficial to have an alternative power source should something happen to your primary power source. This will allow you to continue without tangible interruption to work. This will keep your devices running for sometime pending fix for the primary power source.
