Do what you do best. You were just promoted to AE cause you crushed SDR/BDR role. That means you are good at getting meetings and quickly finding pain. Keep doing that. You just don't have to pass your hard work to someone else. Set as many discovery calls for yourself the first 60 days to practice the next step in the sales process. That is good Discovery.

As an AE, you will be responsible for building a strategy for your assigned region, book of business, or named accounts and developing a sales strategy through cross-functional teams such as xDRs, Marketing, and Partners. You should always continue your prospecting and outbound activities, which are critical to a successful sales career.

As an SDR - you have the hardest job in terms of opening the door into an account. To make a smooth transition, follow 1-2 AE's on a few deals (jump on every call they have, and learn who else they engage with, like presales or commercial teams). Shadow these deals from start to finish. Ask newer AE's what they wish they had known 6 months previously and learn from their mistakes. Then ask for 4-5 accounts that you can work as if they were your own, with the AE to help you through the process. As a top performing SDR, this is an ideal stretch assignment.

Shadow as much as possible! Get exposure to different AEs and various sales cycles. The more you immerse yourself, the more comfortable you’ll become, and you'll also start building a network of future stakeholders along the way.

Hopefully you have a good Sales Manager that can find an AE to mentor you as you continue to do your job as a BDR. I always made sure people knew what was expected at the next level, by teaming them up to see how a proposal is developed, how the AE goes about finding a champion and closing a deal. That way when they made the transition, they knew exactly what was expected from them, and they were more successful. Don't just make the jump and assume you will be OK. It's very different asking someone for their time veruse asking someone for their budget.

You are more likely to receive a positive response from decision makers within your target accounts if you invest time studying and analyzing their businesses and crafting interesting outreach messages. Engage with their post in a way that comes across as genuine and informed.

Also being proactive and taking initiative to contribute to these meetings/calls in possible capacity like preparing presentations and proposing to share the presentations, providing with some due diligence, objection handling points. Shadowing is great but trying to take the initial steps in parallel builds confidence.

If it is an internal candidate mandatory to get a reference from the SDR manager. Yes, focus on goal attainment and soft skill levels. Just as valuable is asking for feedback with call observations. How well did the SDR execute discovery with uncovering customer needs/challenges. How accurate was pairing the right solution to the need/challenge and messaging the value to the customer. How open was the SDR to feedback provided, how quickly was their implementation and was there improvement. CRM utilization to manage business and organization with follow up. Do the same with external SDR candidates and references.

The leap depends on what type of product you are selling, how complex it is, what the average sales cycle is and what the average deal size is. The larger, more complex and longer the sales cycle it is, the bigger the leap as range of skills to navigate the sales cycle and orchestrate resources to help you win deals is very different to the fast paced almost transactional approach in that initial qualification phase.

Your work will demand you go to the field if you are ready. Numbers and retention! The ability to run meetings and projects, with an astute knowledge of your account book.

This is a great application for the quote “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Rather than changing your wardrobe, starting taking ownership of the deal cycle all the way to Closed Won/Loss just like an AE would. Here’s some ways to do that: -Come up with a relevant ranking criteria to help predict outcomes of all pipeline you generate. -Communicate these expected outcomes to your AE well ahead of the meetings. You are the navigator riding shotgun in the race while they’re driving. -Find common characteristics between closed won deals you’ve generated. Then optimize your prospecting efforts based on these findings. When you can begin to predict the outcome of your sales cycle accurately, you’re ready for the jump.
