1 Choose a template

When beginning a sprint, the first step is to choose a template that meets your needs and preferences. There are many free and paid templates available online, or you can create your own from scratch. A good template should have a clear layout that displays the sprint goal, duration, and team members. Additionally, it should include a table that lists several items, from assignees and tasks and their status to estimated/actual hours and any comments. I use the simplest thing possible - lately I am having success with GitHub projects. I like the list and board views. There is also a timeline view, but I haven't used that feature yet.

Know your audience. Try to understand how to communicate updates concisely with the most effective medium for your audience. For example, some managers & stakeholders will (appropriately) not waste time opening a spreadsheet or trying to figure out reports in Jira. Don't force it; it's not going to happen no matter how cool or sophisticated the report is. Respect people's time. If a 30-second bullet point summary will suffice, do that instead of a 30-minute meeting. Respect your own time. Once you know your audience(s) well enough, operationalize the process itself. Maybe it's a Slack message template. Maybe it's some Jira plugin that makes pretty charts out of JQL queries. Whatever it is, operationalize it.
