In Scrum specifically, one could argue that UAT happens at various times throughout a Sprint (i.e, req gathering, the AC of USs, Sprint Review/ Demos) therefore “UAT” that has sole dependency on Stakeholders as a final stage in the Sprint may be more of a lean into the Waterfall approach.
Beta testing is the process of exposing the product to a larger and more diverse group of users, usually outside the development team or the organization, to collect feedback and identify any issues or bugs that might have been missed during UAT. In agile, beta testing can be done in parallel with UAT, or after UAT, depending on the release strategy and the risk level of the product. Beta testing can be done in different modes, such as open beta, closed beta, or staged beta, depending on the scope and the objectives of the testing.
In my opinion beta testing is vital in the agile framework as it validates implementations in real-world scenarios before a GA release. In my previous projects we introduced controlled introduction, a form of beta testing, includes a limited release to select users, offering benefits like risk mitigation, gradual rollout, feedback collection, effective marketing, and reduced impact of issues. This approach allows gaining insights, identifying problems, and refining the product based on user feedback before the official GA release, leading to a more successful and well-received final product.
Beta testing in Agile is crucial for several reasons: 1. User Feedback: Beta testing provides an opportunity to gather valuable feedback directly from real users who are not part of the development team. This feedback helps identify bugs, usability issues, and areas for improvement, enabling the team to make necessary adjustments before the final release. 2. Real-World Environment: Beta testing allows the software to be tested in a real-world environment, outside the controlled development environment. It helps uncover any unforeseen issues that may arise when the software is used in different configurations, setups, or by a diverse user base.
Planning UAT and beta testing in agile requires a clear understanding of the goals, scope, criteria, and methods of the testing. Collaboration with the development team, customer, product owner, and other stakeholders is essential to ensure that the planning is aligned with sprint goals, the product backlog, and the definition of done. Key aspects of planning UAT and beta testing include defining test objectives and outcomes, selecting test participants and their roles and responsibilities, determining the test environment and tools/resources needed, creating a test plan/test cases/scenarios, establishing a test schedule, and setting up communication channels.
Executing UAT and beta testing in agile requires following the test plan and conducting the testing activities according to the schedule and methods. This should be done in a timely and efficient manner, with close collaboration and communication between the test participants and the development team. Additionally, the execution should be flexible and adaptive, allowing for changes and feedback throughout the process. Preparing the test data and environment, performing test cases or scenarios, collecting and analyzing feedback and issues, reporting and prioritizing findings and recommendations, as well as validating and verifying fixes and improvements are key aspects of executing UAT and beta testing.
Evaluating UAT and beta testing in agile involves objectively and transparently measuring and assessing the effectiveness and the value of the testing. The evaluation should include the development team, customer, product owner, and any other relevant stakeholders. The evaluation should be based on the test objectives, acceptance criteria, and definition of done. When evaluating UAT and beta testing, key aspects to consider are comparing the actual results with the expected outcomes, calculating key performance indicators and metrics, identifying strengths and weaknesses of the testing, reviewing and refining the testing process and practices, and celebrating and acknowledging achievements and learnings.
