I’d add bringing them along to client meetings during scoping. Makes for deeper discussions on possibilities and aligned appreciation for the expectations/outcomes that the analysis is to support.

First, stop the segregation between the supposed noble world of “Business” and the nerdy world of IT. There is no such hierarchy; if these are the silos, they should be broken down. IT and Data is clearly where the global innovation comes from. Relevance is not related to who wears a Business suit and who wears a Hoodie. Give your Data Experts all credit and the genuine feeling that what they can think in terms of complexity and ability to abstract is most admirable. Prepare to offer the best help translating the not-for-everybody-obvious problem statements and findings to ensure quick usage to achieve business outcomes.

Having defined scope, knowing your data sources and having a clear understanding of issues and limitations are all key. However, in my experience it can be of great advantage to engage data analysts or even better researchers with data analytics skills as early as possible in the project. Data analytics is not only about monitoring what is happening but some of the best work comes out of exploring the data asking questions of it that you haven’t already pre-determined it can help refine scope, identify problems and questions that people didn’t know it was important to ask, taking this approach also helps with spotting issues before the become problem. This is a a relatively good generalization of how analytical projects should progress. I use the word good because it is about as interesting as this article. Sometimes understanding micromanagment and exercising you ability to excise or surgicaly remove redundantcies of a project can actually cut out a massive amount of unnecessary work and unnecessary oversight.
