How do you teach food safety to consumers and stakeholders?

Food science is the study of the physical, biological, and chemical makeup of food; and the concepts underlying food processing.

Food safety means hygienic measure taken to ensure food meant for human consumptions are free from contamination, and any food poisoning which can be inimical to the health and wellbeing. Food safety is a standard procedures taken from harvesting, processing, preservation and presentation to prevent direct and indirect source of food contamination or food poisoning that can bring about spread of diseases and other health problems. The fundamental tool for food safety is Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP)

Food safety is very important and the more we know about the safer food will be. One of the things that I would do is remind food industry workers to wash their hands and remind then of the food danger zone. In other words talk to them about keeping the food at the right temp while preparing it, this is one of the main times when airborne diseases can take affect.

Knowing and understanding your audience is a critical part of an effective teacher. Also understanding language and culture of your audience is very important, this will enable the Instructor to use the appropriate teaching method. Thanks

A key message to all food businesses that produce food products through manufacturing or as retailers or cafes and restaurants or if you want to donate food. There is a common duty of care to the consumer and to ensure food is produced safe and suitable.

In my experience I find using examples that relate with they every day lives. Taking real events that they have witnessed to put the point across. This makes it far more relatable and stays in they minds as it becomes tangible to them.

The most important piece of advice to the audience is to provide the "why" behind everything. For example, "Why do we have to store raw meats on the bottom of the refrigerator?" The reason is if we were to store it on the top shelf, we would have to cook everything below it to the appropriate temperature to kill the bacteria within the food item. I do not think broccoli will look and/or taste good when we have to cook it to 170F.

I have done several different trainings that involve different ways of presenting. As leaders, we need to focus on everyone instead of the 1 employee who learns differently. So, it is nice to start off with a lecture explaining it with a couple of pictures for examples. Then actually have it as a real life situation so they know what it looks like in the real world.

Evaluations is another constant with observations while doing walk throughs and quizzes for certain type of lessons.
