How do you teach fiber optic skills to other engineers and technicians?

Practice makes perfect! The biggest, most memorable lessons learned are found deep in the trenches. Hands-on experience in some of the worst circumstances where solutions are made & found on the fly can have the largest impact on a splicers success over the entirety of their career. The ability to overcome what seems to be the impossible through thorough troubleshooting is something that sticks with you and the knowledge obtained & applied in those situations will separate you drastically from those who’ve understanding of fiber optic systems comes only from what they’ve learned in a controlled environment.

Sur ce point rien dire ...l'équipement cest le premier arsenal de guerre sans le bon équipement même avec toute la technicité et la theorie apprise sa naboutira pas ...en d'autres termes le technicien en fibre optique ou engenier ou l'apprenant doit toujours avoir le bon équipement pour pouvoir faire le bon diagnostic et travailler aisément.

A great example of this is constructing an outdoor training space. If you are a large company, invest in a few poles. Lash up some fiber and train your team in a controlled “real-world” environment. Consider training at a table in the parking lot instead of indoors. Use your available resources to combat elements if necessary. Give your trainees a safe, feedback rich environment, but don’t spare them the real world challenges.

Practice in the workplace. Performing simpler tasks first under supervision. Theoretical education is also very important. The second most important is practice. And finally, the third most important is practice :)

I consider it vital to pair new engineers and technicians with experienced mentors for ongoing guidance and knowledge transfer. You must adapt the training to the specific needs of your student, ensuring a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application is extremely helpful.

When teaching fiber optics, treat it like you’re teaching a new language. Be compassionate that you’re immersing your new-hires in a culture that they’re unfamiliar with. Classroom terminology can vary greatly from that used in the field. Be sure to have word/term association sheets available. I.e. “‘Distributed split’ is often called ‘distributed star’ in literature. There is no difference in application.”

Good splicer or fiber expert stands out and paid well, Their increment and job position should be linked somehow how well they train their coleuges.

Ask questions. I know this seems very basic, but there is a lot of knowledge to be gained by asking about hypotheticals or processes that you’re not directly involved in. Theres no shame in not knowing. Nobody knows what you do, or do not, fully understand. Most trainers are generous with their knowledge. No single person can teach you everything. So, please, ask about what you want to know. Help your trainers help you. Don’t let pride get in the way.

If you’re a technician and there is an emergency after hours call out list available, volunteer to be on it. Yes, it can suck to get called out at 2am or be out for 24 hours straight, but nothing will force you to learn faster than being on outages after hours. You learn to use and trust your equipment and to become comfortable with making impactful decisions on your own.
