How do you teach environmental safety to new workers?

Management commitment is a must in this case and they should lead by example. An intrinsic culture should be developed in the workforce. People should not care about environmental aspects on job because "THEY HAVE TO" instead they should care about it because "THEY WANT TO" this will bring ownership by employees. Remaining following mediums can be used - Awareness through safety talks - Campaigns with employee involvement - Focused trainings - Sharing lesson learnt & experiences

Safety induction must be conducted for every new employee joins for any environmental services. They must be given adequate training on how to use relevant PPEs They also must be taught on various JSA with respect to type of service that they are going to attend.

In my view Primary is Management Commitment on Save the Environment for setting the target and vision for future years Secondary procedures that can enhances the practices by the employees and have to be followed by the new employees

it's crucial to provide comprehensive training that covers various aspects.This includes explaining the importance of environmental protection, outlining company policies and procedures regarding waste disposal, recycling, and energy conservation, and demonstrating proper handling of hazardous materials. Incorporating real-life scenarios, interactive sessions, and practical demonstrations can effectively illustrate the significance of their role in maintaining a safe and eco-friendly workplace.

I like use do the talk when they are doing the new hire orientation. I explain the importance of understanding the hazards and the controls, explain WHMIS and the importance of the SDS sheets and understanding what they are working with and the potential consequences of not respecting the safe work practices and procedures. Personal experiences is huge in explaining and getting comprehension. Education, experience, and testing.

Procedures help when they are correct and followed. There must be a culture in place for these to be discussed and improved though - even the expert writing them can have something they missed pointed out by fresh eyes!

I will like to add that it is very important to undertand the need for the procedures and the importance of complying with the requirements, give practical examples of procedure violation and its consequence and then the benefits of compliance to procedures. Emphasize the use of PPE as last resort but following procedures and understanding intrinsic safety controls are more important. Talk about the specification for the right PPE to use for different activities, the handling and maintenance of the PPE. Encourage the personnel to report unsafe conditions and acts to help improve the system (report acts and not people). Stop any work which is unsafe and has the potential for accident, injury or fatality.

Simply expecting workers to follow the protocols will seldom work, especially if these are lengthy written instructions. To ensure safety procedures are followed, you need to make them as concise as possible. For example, instead of expecting operators to read the entire risk assessment to understand PPE requirement, present them with a card displaying a photograph of a worker wearing the required PPE.

Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification: Provide workers with training on identifying potential environmental hazards at work. If they have any concerns, encourage them to contact the appropriate authority immediately. Waste Management and Recycling: Instruct your employees in proper waste management procedures, such as segregating and disposing of different types of waste. Energy Conservation: Inform employees of the value of energy conservation and the ways in which they may help to cut down on energy use at work. Give useful energy-saving advice, such as shutting off lights and appliances when not in use.

All workers, regarding of their role should have basic health and safety training. Depending on specificities of individual profiles, relevant training modules can be assigned to workers' competency profiles. For example both plant and office workers need to know how to report incident, however only plant personnel will need training on the correct use of chemical protective clothing.

Repetition is a key component of effective learning. By conducting regular training sessions, employers reinforce important concepts and best practices. Repetition helps new workers retain information and integrate it into their daily routines, making environmental safety second nature.

It is important to establish channels for your workers to provide feedback on safety processes and suggest improvements. If you have a diverse workforce, then you may need to get creative in how you approach this as everyone respinds differently.

My goal is to always demonstrate to all workers that HSE professionals are their best allies. Building trust from day one, by bring the solution rather than a problem will help to establish collaborative environment and open communication.

Even with comprehensive accidents still occur. Encouraging open communication ensures that when incidents happen, new workers are not afraid to report them. This reporting culture enables organizations to investigate and learn from these incidents, leading to improvements in safety protocols.

Clear & consise communication coupled with empathatic behavior with new employees will make Environmental safety more pleasant & successful. No usage of jargons,speak the language which the worker easily understand & collaborate with differentlyable people.

Some companies link worker's KPIs to their safety performance. This may have a negative effect as people will tend to hide any incident they were involved in a fear to loose incentives. Instead, a more productive approach would be to link KPIs to the level of engagement in HSE promotion with initiatives such as good incident reporting, participation in HSE audits and safety committees.

Giving feedback may mean going beyond known and safe limits. Getting feedback may mean there’s a risk of hurting people’s feelings. In short, it's not easy. It may generate distress, but it's necessary. Feedback is a powerful instrument — but it has to be a deliberate practice that respects each person’s limits and with the mutually agreed intention of helping people to develop.
