How do you tailor your speech structure to different audiences?

I approach each speech intending to genuinely help people. This altruistic mindset ensures I always share "high-quality content" while respecting each participant's time. In addition, I always provide information with tangible and actionable strategies that I have personally used for success. The best way to teach others is through "Leading by Example."

There's some great advice on here and I echo most of it. Really important not to rush onto crafting your material before you've spent time to know and understand your audience and their needs as best as possible. 4 simple questions I always ask to start my research are: 1. Who are my audience? 2. What are their dreams/aspirations/challenges? 3. Why do they want to hear from me? (or why might they not want to hear from me?) 4. How can I offer most value

Know your role! Understanding their demographics, interests, and expectations allows you to tailor your message effectively. Whether addressing a group of professionals or a community gathering, adapting your tone, language, and content ensures engagement and resonance. By empathizing with your audience’s perspective, you can anticipate their needs and concerns, establishing rapport and credibility from the outset. Ultimately, recognizing and respecting your audience’s unique characteristics fosters meaningful connections and enhances the impact of your message.

No audience is the same as the next. Find out 3 critical things: Basic demographics of WHO your audience is (e.g. titles, tenure, industries, etc.). Find out the SETUP of your stage or room. And find out the PAIN POINTS of your audience. While there are other details you can ask about, this basic info allows you to prepare your materials, speech etc to align to or target your audience's needs, interests and what motivates their daily work. For ex, while you can certainly use the same material for a group of medical doctors (MDs), a shift to clinical professionals should get you to use diff verbiage, pacing, solutions, etc.

While knowing what you want to cover matters, what matters most is what the audience wants, and deserves to get to hear and learn! You’ll know that by asking what the organizer believes they’d appreciate most, and/or surveying the interests to deliver to that feedback!

Here's the deal: before you step onto that stage, you gotta know what you're aiming for. Are you informing, persuading, entertaining, or maybe a bit of everything? Once you've nailed down your objective, shaping your speech becomes a breeze. If you're in educator mode, think clear points and solid evidence to back 'em up. But if you're going for laughs or aiming to captivate, weave in some juicy anecdotes and take your audience on a storytelling journey. Remember, your objectives are like the North Star guiding your speech structure. So, set 'em high, aim for the stars, and watch as your message hits its mark with precision and impact!

Ready to talk about structuring your speech just right for your audience. Once you've got those objectives locked in, it's time to tailor your structure to fit like a glove. For a business crowd, keep it snappy and straight to the point. They're all about efficiency, so hit 'em with those key points and keep things moving. But if you're chatting with a community group, slow it down, sprinkle in some stories, and invite them to join the conversation. Now, onto the nitty-gritty: start strong with an attention-grabbing intro, dive into the meaty bits with a body that's easy to digest, and wrap it all up with a bow in a memorable conclusion.

A word of caution! To much structure can suck the air out of the room. When you structure your presentation build in a few fire escapes. For example if you’re preparing for a high brow audience, & it turns out it’s casual Friday, use one of the fire escapes! Ditch the formal language in your structured speech for a more laidback feel.

Here's the scoop: speaking the language of your audience is key to making that connection stick. For the young and vibrant crowd, dial up the energy with a casual tone and some fun vibes. But if you're mingling with seasoned pros, keep it classy and formal. Think of it like dressing for the occasion—tailored to fit just right. Oh, and don't forget those cultural nods and inside jokes. They're like secret handshakes, signaling to your audience that you're speaking their language—literally and figuratively. So, folks, next time you're crafting that speech, remember to tune in to your audience's wavelength.

No matter the audience, a good visual is key. If I have slides, I often have one title and one picture per slide. I have very little text. By doing so, I can be more unrestricted in how I tell my “story” depending on how the audience responds.

Now, listen up, because this is where things get interesting. Visual aids can be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on how you use them. Picture this: a room full of professionals expecting slick slides packed with data and graphs. They want substance, they want style, and they want it now. But flip the script, and imagine you're in a cozy community meeting. Here, simplicity reigns supreme. Think gentle visuals that complement your words without stealing the show. Remember, folks, visuals are like the seasoning in your speech stew. A pinch here and there can enhance the flavor, but too much can overpower the dish.

Warning: Unless you are presenting new scientific data that will entertain the most erudite Nobel Laureate, no one wants jam-packed PowerPoint slides in a 10 point type 'never seen before' font. And you do know not to read PP slides to people anyway, right? But you also realize that you aren't like a binge-worthy television series where even bathroom breaks are suspended. Most adults expect similarity among talks but respond to novelty, so break the pattern. Pass an inexpensive item out ahead of time whose meaning you relate to your presentation later. Tell a story. Include music. Make any graphics colorful and spare. Use humor. The more senses you call your audience to use, the more rapt the attention and the better their recall.

I always say, “If you feel something, it is good”. With that, I mean if you evoke emotions, any emotions, in those who listen, you have reached them. Therefore, I try to create presentions with friction in them; it could be friction in the form of “look at these negative numbers” and then follow up with a “but look how good they can become”. For me, it is about instilling change can happen and it will start with the ones listening. But to get there the audience needs to have had an emotional reaction first.

If you are speaking to a live conference, illustrate commonly shared issues via a brief case study (no more than one PowerPoint slide) from verified but not well publicized sources, hiding the organization's name. For example, a client wants insight into a complex problem but is reluctant to fund the project sufficiently or you are presented with a well-funded opportunity that walks uncomfortably close to broaching ethical guidelines. Ask your audience for plausible ideas, then reveal what the real organization did, and the consequences of their actions. You can go one step further and ask for remedial steps if that organization missed the mark in its judgment...because every organization makes missteps and recovery is part of learning.

Bring a spare white shirt in case the flight attendant spills coffee with cream down your silk blouse. Type your speech in 20 point type so you don't have to wear your glasses. Carry two copies. Make fun of yourself if you've broken one of your own Golden Rules. Carry mints even if you think you don't need them. Don't have the spinach salad. Make a point of responding to people who asked you difficult questions after your talk so you can thank them for making you smarter. Thank all of the organizers in-person and in writing. Send a gift to the assistant who made your life so much easier.
