1 Choose the right scenes

Instead, pick scenes that reveal the character's motivation, emotion, and conflict, and that allow the actors to improvise or add their own touch. While organising the Casting for a Netflix Original series which was still under wraps and as such vital details could not be disclosed to the actors yet. The Executive Producer wrote entirely new sides for the actors' screen tests. What's most important in the chosen scenes is that the characterisation is similar, also when possible (and I advise that this should be all the time), a character bible/breakdown should be provided for the Actors. Actors should also note that they ought to read the character breakdown of other characters also as this will help inform how they relate to these other actors in scenes.

2 Prepare the actors

You want to give the actors enough information and guidance to prepare for the screen test, but not too much that they feel restricted or over-rehearsed. You can send them the script, the character breakdown, and the scene synopsis a few days before the test, and ask them to memorize their lines and do some research on the role. You can also give them some general feedback on their audition, and let them know what you expect from them in the screen test. However, you should also leave some room for spontaneity and surprise, and encourage the actors to bring their own interpretation and style to the role.

I always advise that a Casting Director handles screen tests, not just because I need more jobs, lol, but more importantly because the actors need to have the best chance of success when they come for screen tests. The Production gains when actors are at their best for screen tests as this potentially provides a good dilemma for the Production as there'd be a good number of top performances to choose from. To ensure this is the situation, it is best to provide a lot of information to the actors about the character(s) they are testing for while also encouraging them to bring a uniqueness to the character. It is very important that the test is conducted in a way that reduces the anxiety of the actor, as a screen test can be anxiety-inducing.

3 Set up the equipment

You want to use the best equipment and settings possible to capture the actors' performance and appearance. You can use a professional camera, microphone, and lighting, or rent them from a studio or a rental company. You can also use a tripod, a monitor, and a slate to stabilize, review, and label your footage. As stated earlier, a Screen test, like any other form of audition is a highly nerve-wracking environment. Even veteran Actors who have won several awards and been at the top for years still get nervous when auditioning or in this case; screen testing. As such, it is important to place equipment in such a way that they will neither distract nor impede the actors performances. A good example can be the manner of lighting up the screen test, it often helps to ensure the lighting is not very harsh such that makes the actors self-conscious, if possible a room that has floor to ceiling windows may be used such that minimal or no additional lighting will be required for the testing hence helping the actors to perform to their best abilities

4 Direct the actors

You want to direct the actors in a way that helps them deliver their best performance and reveals their potential. You can start by introducing yourself and the crew, and making the actors feel comfortable and relaxed. You can then explain the scene, the character, and the objective, and give them some basic instructions and tips. You can also ask them to do a rehearsal or a warm-up before the actual test. During the test, you can watch and listen carefully, and give them constructive feedback and adjustments. You can also ask them to do multiple takes, or try different approaches or emotions, to see how they respond and adapt.
