Business analyst profession is a journey that demands patience , self evaluation and continous improvement. The best part of this journey is it gives you enormous chances at each stage where you can correct yourself and grow. For ex - When you prepare BRD you may miss something, when you prepare FRD you have time to correct your mistake done in BRD , when you write user story you have time to correct everything as it will get into development. So it is a journey in itself which gives you enormous chances and opportunities to learn and grow. This keeps you growing and enthusiastic about delivering it perfectly.

A simple way to identify your strengths and weaknesses is to observe the approach, behaviours and practices of fellow BAs or wider transformation peers. Recognise areas where your own abilities equal or exceed the standards you observe. This will help give you confidence in your abilities. Be open and honest in your self-appraisal. This will help recognise areas where your performance in certain areas, can be improved to reach the levels you observe in others. How I learn from mistakes: When I make a mistake, I don't get upset. Instead, I figure out why it happened, so I can avoid it next time. I also ask for advice from my coworkers, and this helps me get better at what I do. Collaboration with colleagues and seeking feedback regularly is also vital for my personal and professional development.

Practicing continuous improvement by adhering to the PDCA cycle. Learn from own mistakes, set realistic objectives, identifying both strengths and shortcomings, access strength as well as opportunities. Maintain a project journal for every project you work on.Throughout the project / engagement, update the journal with relevant facts, events, questions raised / asked, learnings (sprint reviews, retrospectives, 1:1's, feedback sessions) and outcomes. The purpose is to build your own project database. Consult the journal before, during and after projects. This way lessons learnt from previous projects will be there to guide you on new projects / engagements. The journal can be physical or digital, whatever works.

It is very important for Business analysts to upgrade along with the growing industrial opportunities. In recent days, we could see the visible progress of generative AI in all industries. As Business analysts, we need to identify the need of the hour with such technologies and leverage it in our current job role. Making consistent progress will help us master the skills with time. Networking is also important to get inputs from peers or people with similar interest in learning new things often.

Agree on the cross dependency learning comment, in particular accept challenges that expose you to "adjacent" areas of expertise. Adjacent areas might be another area of financial services if your expertise is mortgage. Or IT infrastructure or security if your expertise is in IT application development and testing. That way you can add some value and still also learn a new area. Try to work with people smarter than you, that way you will learn much more. I learned more faster when working as a BA in very complex areas, the challenges push you to learn faster . And, admit your mistakes and try not to make the same mistake again. There is a 70-20-10 rule which says that if you want to learn something properly, spend 70% of time on hands-on experience and practice, 20% on getting experience and collaborating with others, and only 10% on theory. Learning just the theoretical part won't create a long-term memory and you would likely forget the biggest part you've learned over time. Action is important I mean implimentation is important in any profession you need to implement what you learn. As you know you never get what you want either you do what's other can do. If you feel uncomfortable in requesting feedback on your mistakes or find it difficult to know when to ask, why not introduce regular sessions with the sole intention of sharing improvement areas. Perhaps, regular retrospective sessions for stakeholders to share what went well, what could be improved (or didn’t go so well), what else could be introduced in future or what to stop doing. You don’t have to be an agile team to use and introduce, useful, agile techniques.

Actively seek feedback during the quiet times, e.g., at the end of a project. Especially seek feedback when you expect it to be negative. Actively seek constructive feedback, "Was there anything I could have done better?" Don't interrupt during feedback. Don't explain away feedback. Actively thank them every time you are given feedback you did not want to hear; appreciate that it was awkward for them to give that feedback. Finally, if possible, follow up regarding the feedback after you have had a chance to incorporate it in your behavior, "Last month you said I was curt with you over the phone. I have really made an effort to be more patient and polite on the phone. How well do you think I've done over the last month?"

I believe it’s important to see mistakes as valuable learning opportunities that often expose our blind spots. As a Business Systems Analyst, I approach mistakes with a growth mindset. When I make a mistake, I take ownership, analyze the root cause, and find areas for improvement. The way I like to approach this, is by asking myself the following questions: 1. Why did this happen? 2. What are the things I need to do to prevent this in the future? 3. With the learning that I have now, how would I do things in retrospect? I also seek feedback from mentors, stakeholders and colleagues to gain different perspectives. Remember, mistakes are opportunities for growth. Embrace them, learn from them, and use them to develop professionally!

There are two ways of obtaining feedback that I find particularly useful as a Business Analyst: 1 - On a team setting: for example, during the team retrospectives. This feedback is usually not direct, but by understanding your team pain points, you can already identify improvement actions in your BA work (e.g.: user stories are being blocked during development because dependencies were not mapped sufficiently). 2 - On a individual setting: schedule one-to-ones with your team members and other stakeholders and ask specific questions to understand what you can improve/change to make their job easier. You could also decide to send these feedback requests in writing. Any feedback not given or received is a missed opportunity to improve.

All the points are mentioned above are essential and important for keeping a business analyst competent and knowledgeable. However, I believe collaboration is a critical aspect of a business analyst. It involves working closely with cross-functional teams, stakeholders and SMEs to gain different perspectives and insights. Which helps the BA to avoid tunnel vision and improve decision making process. Collaboration in business analysis is about leveraging the collective knowledge, skills, and experiences of a diverse group to achieve better outcomes. As a business analyst, there are numerous avenues to maintain competence and glean insights from errors. To stay competent as a business analyst, it is important to broaden the skills, familiarising market trends, basic understanding of new emerging technologies, networking across all levels from frontline to Exec teams to understand the culture/attitudes of people and gain insights which will help BA to influence Stakeholder.
