How do you showcase your mixing and mastering portfolio and attract new clients?

Choose your best work, but also keep in mind that your potential client may have a different perspective on what tickles their ears the most, so arranging your portfolio not only from a favorites perspective, but from a mastering perspective of having the titles play in a pleasing sequence can also help with your presentation and reception. In short, show your range and diversity but the experience of going through your portfolio can be arranged to feel like an experience all on its own instead of a collage of sounds. This also is a way to show your craftspersonship and attention to detail in overarching way.

I approach this the way I approached my years on-air. From the 'theater of the mind' perspective. I want to take the listener on a musical journey. The most significant part of this is your transitions. They have to make sense. At times that a hard stop with a hard start, at times it's with a seamlessly smooth blend, and at times it's with dissonance, but it has to flow and make sense. With audition work, the challenge is increased because you're not going to put anywhere close to an entire song on the sample. So you must make the transitions within the song seamless as well.

The way I would go about this is to bounce a section of the rough mix(still unprocessed) and the after your mixing and/or mastering, You also bounce the same section. Yon can then combine both audio files with a voice at the beginning of each section saying what section comes next. As in "Before" and "After".

It's super important to promote your portfolio! When starting, one of the first and most important things to do is create a website and upload your porfolio of production/mix/master projects. Then to attract new clients you've got to market! The way I did it, was whenever I finished a new project I asked the artist if I could share the song to my TikTok. So I used social media as another portfolio of my music projects. Organic posting on TikTok brought in about 75% of my sales in 2022, with the other 25% being word of mouth // customer referrals. It's important to market!

Also use your platforms in the promoting phase like REVERBNATION.COM They can really help promote. Cost, of course depends on how many people you want to reach . They can also expand the demographics and you can have a better visual with charts, plus help with gigs for your artists, if you have a Label.

These portfolio samples of your work, when done right, will take time to get right. You will be tempted to just use this for the next year or more. Don't. Update it every 3 months, no longer than every 6 months. Music changes and your skills are always improving. Always show your best self.

You're always learning and getting better, so make sure you're updating your playlist with your mixes in it constantly! Especially if a client is blown away by a certain mix
